Did Alabama “make” Saban and the Bear, or did Saban and the Bear make Alabama?

I think it was the great coach, plus the solid program in a good recruiting area that yielded unbelievable results.

Saban won at LSU, but it wasn’t anything like his Bama run. The Bear won all his titles at Alabama, even though he gave Kentucky football its best season

Louisiana has insane instate talent. Is Alabama simply a better program than LSU at its foundation, or did Alabama just get the two best CFB coaches ever?

Agreed.

Saban struggled at times at LSU. 2004 Iowa and Oregon State gave him all he could handle. We'll never know but I suspect he wins a few less titles if he stayed at LSU. But certainly LSU (where 3 different coaches have won titles this century) is not comparable to Kentucky or A&M.

No school makes a coach. We were lucky to have Bear, and because of that we got Saban.

I think it's just the best 2 coaches.

I also think due to instate talent if he stayed he would have way more than what he has now than at bama. 3 different coaches in what is almost 4 year differences in each title is remarkable. Imagine having a solid foundation and consistency of coaching in one place during that time, you would have probably twice more.

Coaches Bryant and Saban are two of the great coaches on college football, But Alabama also had 3 more NC winning coaches (two of them, Thomas and Wade) won multiple titles)

President Denny made football a priority at Alabama and the university responded.

Alabama expects to be great in football, and works to make that happen everyday.

The results are evident.

Well, no way to know.

Also possible his experience with the Dolphins gave him a perspective he wouldn't have otherwise had.

I think the floor at Bama has always been higher. Idiots like Dubose and Shula still managed to find a way to 10 wins now and again. I think that every Bama coach post-Bear has had a 10 win season. That's pretty amazing.

The reason why is obvious. Talent. It somehow miraculously accumulated there. One of life's great mysteries.

In 5 years at LSU, he won 2 SEC Championships and 1 National Championship.
His 1st 5 years at Bama, he won 1 SEC Championship and 2 national Championships.

I wouldn't say his success at LSU was way off. The difference was that he had the NFL itch and left as his LSU run was hitting it's stride, not that it is that much easier to win at Bama.

This as much as anything should tell you that the great coaches made the school.

Alabama was winning fairly big long before Bear Bryant.

Alabama, by and large is why SEC teams stopped getting invites to the Rose Bowl. That was back in the leather helmet days.

I forget the finer points but back in the 20's or maybe 30's, I think Washington State was the premier program in the country. Well the team scheduled to play against them in the Rose Bowl one year backed out for some reason and nobody else wanted to play them.

Well Alabama stepped up. Hopped a train out west. Played them and beat the shite out of them at a time when Southern football was regarded as largely inferior to everyone else's brand of football.

This went on for several years or so and other southern teams got in on the west coast arse pounding as well. I think Georgia was one of those teams.

Anyway, they got fed up with it and the rest is history. It was Alabama though that put southern football on the map and pretty much kept it there.

Bear Bryant and Nick Saban both had career winning percentages under 70% when they arrived at Alabama in 1958 and 2007 respectively. They won over 80% of their games while coaching at Alabama.

Gene Stallings had a sub-500 winning percentage when he arrived at Alabama in 1990, with only one winning season on his resume. He won north of 80% of his games while coaching at Alabama.

Coincidences? Maybe. Maybe not.

He was only here 5 years, won in 2003 and then Les won 35-5 the next 3 years with with 2 division wins, an SEC champions, sugar bowl win, and a NC.

Saban was set up to roll here too.

To be fair, Saban became a better coach after he left Miami and decided to dedicate himself to college football. I do not think saban would have become saban without the Miami Dolphins experiment

the Rose Bowl

Yep, 1926 Rose Bowl vs. Washington.

Washington had won a game 108-0 that year. Tulane declined the offer to play them.

Washington then waivered as well, and when Alabama signed on to play, they changed their mind and accepted the invite.

At the time the idea of inviting a Southern team was laughable, as in how "a bunch of farmers" could even compete with a team like Washington.

As the team returned victorious by train, they were greeted in major towns by huge crowds and bands.

Alabama would be asked back the next season, starting a string of Southern teams that did so over the next 20 years.

Known as the "The Game That Changed The South."

Remember the Rose Bowl, we'll win then.

Every coach who has coached D1 football somewhere else and at Alabama has at least a +10% winning percentage at Alabama compared to his other stops.

Saban and Bryant would have been great anywhere, but Alabama has won at a high level outside of them, and almost every coach at Alabama had had at least one really good season (even awful coaches like DuBose).

Can you tell me more about what it feels like to have a University President who embraces athletics? I just want to imagine it for a minute.

They benefited greatly from Saban raising the floor.
Also, Miles is a goofball but he was a halfway decent coach prior to LSU else Skip wouldn't have hired him. He remained a halfway decent coach until he refused to bring his offense out of the Stone Age.

Dubose and Shula never held another head coaching job in Division I-A.

I'm just glad Woodward went out and got a known quantity to replace O and saddled A&M with Jimbo instead of us.

Agreed and one way or another he was going to chase that dream. Skip knew that sooner or later Saban was going to make the jump. Unlike Spurrier, when it didn't pan out he didn't have to take a step backwards to a lesser program.

Spurrier is easily the winningest coach in Carolina history. Saban leads in winning percentage and in a few years will eclipse Bear's win total. I don't see him retiring maybe ever but certainly not before he gets that record. It's going to be a huge deal.
