All it takes is the keys being in the ignition. It doesn't matter if the car is running or not. I heard it was running though

Not going to lie. I have done this. And reclining in the driver's seat is much more comfortable than trying to sleep in the back if you're over about 5'2" and 120 lbs.

And no, I'm not saying he didn't drive there. I don't know what he did. But neither does anyone else yet.

I once hid my keys under a rock in the landscaped area of a bank parking lot and then proceeded to sleep it off in the truck. When I got up, I couldn't find them and had to call the wife to come get me.

For YEARS after that, any time I was near that bank, I looked for my keys. Never did find them.

Also, this happened after a Bottle Rockets show. Y'all should listen to the Bottle Rockets

No melt here. If he was in the back seat sleeping it off then IMO he made the right decision rather than driving hammered. For a kid in his position this isn't a terrible outcome. He may end up missing a game but I have no problem with him playing. run him. Play him.

I know a guy that a DUI in his driveway. He was washing his car with the keys in the ignition, turned to accessory with the radio on while he was washing the car and drinking beers.

Cop rode by and then turned around pulled up in his driveway and arrested him on the spot.

I hope the prosecutor exercises discretion here. If he wasn't actually operating the vehicle it's just and right to nolle pros it.

It is now being reported by Tide Sports that Hand was in fact not driving his vehicle but was asleep in his parked car at the time of his arrest.

The average joe with a clean record gets to plead this down to public intoxication so Hand should come out fine.

So he pleads down does it mean he shouldnt get disciplined by Saban for the initial offense? So a parent should punish his child for what they did or what the plea to??

Ive never agreed with the ability to get a dui for sleeping it off, but thats for the people to change the laws at this point.

He should get disciplined for what he actually did. He was sleeping off his drunkenness in his car instead of driving. So, no. I wouldn't expect much of a punishment.

Well, after Cam Robinson and Hootie Jones were caught with weed and a stolen gun and were allowed to play, I'd fully expect Hand to play with his much lesser DUI charge.

That would be up to Saban. If it were me, punishment would be based on what he actually did and the circumstances involved in the incident instead of either the formal charge or the final disposition. In this case since he was in a running car that he could have been intending to drive, I would make the punishment would be worse than if he got a PI because he was staggering down the sidewalk but far less than if he'd gotten a DUI while actually operating the vehicle.

There has to be some punishment for this. I would sit him for Alabama's offensive snaps in the first game.

Totally agree, and what I was hoping to get out of posing the question. A reasonable parenting response not the "my kid does nothing wrong" response like the other response was.

At this point I do think the SEC needs to set a standard. Arrest no matter what you get suspended the next game. It'll hold players, and coaches accountable. Really small chance a kid is going to get arrested wrongly. If he is giving an officer lip about being a player or something all a cop has to say is "don't push me to arrest you" to get him to simmer down. Will be the "don't give me a real reason to make you cry" my dad would warn us with. Ha.
