State fans are DESPERATE for relevancy. Baseball Titles only get you so much glory, and it's decidedly less glorious when their in-state rivals match their feat less than a year later.
I like Leach, but if they wanted to actually win something, he's not the guy. He'll consistently win enough games to get them to a bowl game, but he won't challenge anyone for any type of championship. He'll keep State hovering around 7-8 wins a year. He was a response hire after Ole Miss hired Lane and was getting all sorts of press over it.

It’s Arky or LSU in the west
I think Ark or Ms St..
Lean Ms ST with the returning experience.

Arkansas has a great guy coaching. He has a returning QB but what he doesn't have is Burks, the guy that made that QB look better than what he is. My opinion only. Ok, yeah.... they hit the portal and got a guy or 2.... but they are not the beast that Burk was.
Arkansas is hard to say bc they are a solid team but also are not under the radar at all this year after they went 9-4 and a lot of ppl have them as a dark horse contender.
Talent wise they don’t line up next to A&M and LSU in that regards. I have them going 8-4.

Yes but he took advantage of a position that was depleted from the Chad Morris years. So he put in the work and was rewarded. However he isn't some big loss that couldn't be replaced as Sam and his staff have done well recruiting that position of need or done so in the portal. Sam said this was the most
WR depth that he has had since he has been here. The only thing is just inexperience.
I asked that question because I wanted to see besides Burks who was on the same level as an impactfull loss. The players you listed were not on same level of loss as Burks.
Then you need to ask Sam Pittman who has said that he was quite satisfied on how they got good replacements or positions of need in the portal. The only thing that Arkansas fell short in was getting another linebacker.
Yes they got the lead but couldn't keep Arkansas from scoring. It isn't the fault of Arkansas that they can't make a field goal. Maybe Leach should have went for it like some good coaches do instead of leaving it to a kicker that couldn't make them? Maybe they could have won the game.
Having 18 returning starters is a good thing but that doesn't automatically lead to a good year and a good year is a vague term depending on the program expectations. Bringing in new players from such as in the portal doesn't mean that Arkansas will go back the Chad Morris years.
Yep and already have this game as a loss. So certainly not a season killer if Arkansas lost this game.
Ok so that means they are trading field goals for TDs this year.
I don't expect to win at State this year and I don't care if Arkansas is some dark horse this year. Only the final results matter.

100%. No one player was as big of a loss. But losing 3 starters at DB... collectively creates an issue.
See what I mean?

I'm not sure what happened with the FG kickers. I know they had a guy, maybe he injured himeself...? But if the new kickers are as bad... It will be a long year for Ms St.

Both true.
A team could improve via the portal or from being in the system another year. It's why the game is not played on paper.

I have the West like this:
1- Bama
2- Ms St
3- Ark
4- Tamu
5- Ole Miss/LSU
6- Auburn
I don't see Ms St coming here and being in the game at all.

The Athletic "Inside Recruiting"
several high school football coaches in Mississippi:
quote:
“I don’t think Lane cares enough about recruiting to want to have to fight the battle for the kid,”
quote:
“Some people think he’s a great recruiter, and I really don’t. I don’t think he gives a shite about it, to be 100 percent honest. That’s why it wouldn’t surprise me if he left this year.”
These are HS coaches...
quote:
Kiffin hasn’t attended the state coaching clinic since arriving in Oxford, something that previous Ole Miss head coaches always did.
etc etc....

And yet will still land 3 of top 5 players in state. You provided a blanket statement without facts.

High school coaches crying because lane didn’t offer their kids is not the same thing as lane mailing it in. Please consider your source.
It’s not 2010 anymore. Recruiting has changed. Bama can go recruit 10 five star recruits out of high school but the next tier of teams have to be creative.
Lane just got a 5 star #1 running back and a top 10 QB in the transfer portal and people want to say he doesn’t care because they weren’t high schoolers

Chad Morris sucks, no denying that, but he left good players for Pittman, his problem wasn’t recruiting apparently

This is our most balanced team since joining SEC. We might finish behind Bama for second but Fayettenam will scare the frick out of the Tide. It's all about momentum and we have it in spades.

The Big 12, ACC, and PAC 12 are all decently wide open.
Baylor is a good pick, not sure what their odds are to win anything, as someone brought up, but their win total is 7.5 on my book. OK St. would be a viable candidate.
Also like FSU for a dark horse to win the ACC.
Not sure what will happen in the PAC 12 but Utah is too trendy, USC is in a position to prove they deserve their preseason rank (which is not likely according to recent history), and Oregon may or may not be good. Nobody really cares enough about Oregon anymore. They may run the table, or someone more out of left field like a UCLA. Washington is getting a little love but they've been awful recently, not sure why they won't suck again this year.
