FSU desperately wants out of the ACC and its 20-year contract with ESPN, which pays out in the low $30 millions, per school, annually. The deal was supposed to bring stability but the SEC and Big Ten have since expanded and gotten far richer media rights packages. It’s expected that schools in those leagues will make upwards of twice as much as the Seminoles (and the rest of the ACC members) going forward.

There is no clear-cut landing place, but there is plenty of talk among SEC and Big Ten administrators that despite Florida State football's storied past and present strength, FSU wouldn’t be a serious candidate for expansion. Same for Clemson even with its recent national titles.

The SEC is believed to be a less likely option for Florida State, Clemson or Miami — the three most desirable football properties (and this is about football mostly). The league is set to begin as a 16-team operation next season existing in contiguous states. It is already powerful. It is already rich. It has now taken over large swaths of Texas.

The SEC's goal is to play a level of football that appeals to a national audience. It also already has schools in Florida (the University of Florida) and South Carolina (the University of South Carolina).

“My sense is there is more opposition than interest,” one SEC source said.

lol at Miami being a desirable program. They play in front of 10k fans and have less ACC titles than South Carolina

That would leave their only option as the Big 12. That doesn’t fix their weak conference schedule issue.

I guess the SEC hates money. FSU is the #2 brand currently not in the B10 or SEC.

Enough people still watch them on TV though. And they're AAU which matters to the B10.

If the SEC does not take them, they will go to the B10 with their hat in their hand...Would rather not see the B10 making inroads into the south... That having been said, Florida State and Clemson add virtually nothing of value to the SEC footprint... I doubt either team could add the value that they would draw from SEC membership.

This isn't 2012. Brands are what matter, not footprint.

Yes the SEC would take UNC, Clemson, Virginia, FSU to o to 20.

The end game number is 32 teams and 2 conferences. A 64 team division with 2 32 team conferences. Each conference would have 2 16 team divisions to allow 2 8 team groups.

That’s the number to get a real playoff, and crown a real champ.

Any move on FSU and/or the others would be defensive, mainly to block the Big Ten from gaining a foothold in the region.
Sankey fell for this once before. I have a very low level of confidence in his ability to learn anything from the experience. But, unless he wants to kill off conferences altogether and prompt a move to some new mega grouping, then he shouldn't touch FSU or any of the ACC schools with a 10 foot pole, at least not for another decade.

You gotta take the pronouncements about this stuff with a grain of salt. SEC didn’t have an interest in expanding until they did. Notre Dame and Florida State are the biggest two unaligned powers on the board. If Sankey isn’t exploring the addition, he’s doing malfeasance.

Maybe so.. I'm sure this is being scrutinized very closely at the highest level by all member SEC institutions. The bottom line is, if a decision is made that they could add value to the SEC, they will be in... If not they will not be offered membership

We should have snagged Washington and Oregon.

I imagine the SEC would want more than just FSU & CU. They’d want UNC & UVA

I dont want CU in the SEC...but I do want CU out of the ACC. It would be great to not have to play against the ACC refs when we play them at home.

Sankey put his foot in his mouth with the poor deal we made by putting all of our eggs in the basket with ESPN. CBS is paying a lot of $ to the Big 10 now

Why? Don't say money -- OU and Texas didn't garner existing members any more money, so those two schools certainly wouldn't. Same would be true if you were talking about the LA schools.

Whatever any school you may care to list may have to offer, unless you are going to play more than 12 games in a season, 16 is really getting to the limit for having something like a conference as we know it.
