Since I know how much everyone OTR loves them some Merlins.

SDS interview

quote:

“You know,” Mullen said, “if you had to associate me with coaching somewhere, you say, ‘Hey, where’s, you know, what is your school? What is your school that you coached at?’ I’d say Mississippi State. That would be the school I would claim.”

I would hope so as you were at State over twice as long as a head coach.

quote:

But there was 1 other thing I had to ask Mullen as he enters his second season away from coaching — if Marco Wilson doesn’t throw a shoe against LSU in 2020, is he still at Florida?

“Probably, yes,” Mullen told SDS on a recent episode of The Saturday Down South Podcast. “Now obviously there are so many different things that go into it, but I think there’s a chance of that being the case, which is a tough deal. And who knows … I wouldn’t picture the reason I’m not there was because of that, but I think we win that game, there’s a different mindset. How we play Alabama, how the year shakes out. We might even get into the Playoffs. We get in the Playoffs, I think we have a shot."

No way we would have jumped over A&M.

I don't know why Mullen was fired from Florida.

But I'd have to guess a single action, from a single player, in a single game is not the reason.

This is correct, but it is a good way for Mullen to pass the blame.

IMO, Kirby sped up the process with this quote after the 2021 WLOCP:

quote:

"There’s no coach out there that you can out-coach recruiting. No coaching is going to out-coach players. Anybody will tell you our defense is good because we have good players."

Mullen's hatred of recruiting was putting Florida at a more distant talent disadvantage every year.

Florida has been behind other schools for the majority of the last 10-15 years in terms of facilities and player experience.

Not breaking news. McElwain pretty much said the same thing.

He is setting up to go back to Starkville after Arnett fails.

A single play in a single game can be the breaking point.

They turned right around and basically took one of Sabans best teams down to the wire.

He got fired for lack of recruiting which led to him being 6-7 (2-6 Conf.) and probably hanging on to Grantham too long.

This has to be the main reason, his refusal to bust arse recruiting to keep the talent level up was his undoing at UF.

Billy knows what's what and he's killing it.

to be fair I think he answered it in a fair way. If that shoe isnt thrown yall win that game. Which may or may not have saved his job.

Maybe he should have stayed at MSU then. He could have retired there and they would have even built him a statue. He was already making millions. I never understand why coaches make this jump from a school with mid-level expectations and high pay to a place where you make a little bit more but expectations are unrealistic.

Florida has always cycled through coaches. That is just their nature. I lived in Florida years ago.

The reputation they used to have was a lot of outside interference from the boosters. Is that still true? I don't know.

The % of narcissists that make up CEOs, politicians and Head Coaches is always abnormally high.

Here Mullen shows the classic trait, creating a different reality that would have happened without the mistake of someone else. He speaks with open qualifications to give an out if later cornered.

He was fired because like tRant has always claimed: he’s arrogant, hates recruiting, makes boneheaded decisions + held onto Grantham too long.

Extra credit: when Marco threw the shoe and cost us the game, Mullen made him a team captain in the SECCG the week after
