Maybe peoples naive enough to encouragingly forfeit a majority status are people that aren’t really around any more, or at the least were assimilated into another culture. Hence this defensive trait being passed down to every living being.
There is a difference between being scared of an individual who is different than you, and being a person that would rather not forfeit your culture’s majority status to that another culture’s within a single governing body. You absolutely can respect and interact with other cultures while still preferring control over your own lifestyle. Are all these Muslims assimilating to the European lifestyle, no.

Every culture wants to control its own destiny. It’s not about proximity, it’s not about interactions on an individual and daily basis, it’s not about race (though usually this comes with a varying degree of cultural difference). It’s simply about competing cultures under a single body of government, all trying to live according to their own beliefs / customs / desires. Why do you think borders have and will always exist in the first place?
