The American Football Coaches Association has asked the NCAA rules committee to take up the issue of players faking injuries when it meets next month.

The AFCA Ethics Committee voted in January to recommend that the committee address the practice, which has caused tension within the sport for years. Rather than use a timeout, defensive players often will fake an injury in order to stop the clock and slow the momentum of the opposing offense.

"Our ethics committee, which suggests rules changes to the NCAA, said by unanimous consent that this has got to stop," said AFCA executive director Todd Berry. "So they asked the rules committee to do something about it. It's bad for football."

The current rule, which doesn't directly address the practice of faking injuries, says that anytime the clock is stopped for an injury, the injured player is required to go to the sideline and sit out only one snap before he's eligible to return.

"Rules need to have teeth," Berry said. "And if there's no teeth, there's no impact."

Last year, the NCAA rules committee met in person and spent multiple days discussing the topic of faking injuries. Steve Shaw, who serves as the secretary-rules editor of the NCAA football rules committee in addition to his role as national coordinator of officials, described the debate as vigorous at the time.

Hoping to avoid a rule that would inevitably punish legitimate injuries as well as fake ones, the rules committee decided to let it be known among coaches and administrators that it was prepared to act if those in the sport didn't move to stop the practice of faking injuries immediately. A tape of questionable injuries was sent to all FBS programs as a quasi warning.

"We did not eliminate the feigning injuries," Shaw said. "Even if you just watched the bowl season, you saw some peculiar actions."

Berry said that while they saw some decline in the number of questionable injuries, it wasn't nearly enough, adding that "any of it is bad."

"It's time," Berry said. "... There needs to be a harsh deterrent."

What that exact deterrent is remains to be seen. One potential option, Berry said, would require an injured player to miss the remainder of the series. Coaches would be able to use a timeout in order to "buy" that player back into the game right away.

The NCAA rules committee is expected to meet virtually in early March.

"We'll have heavy debate," Shaw said, "and see where that goes."

The rule about missing rest of drive or burn a timeout. Seems like a good deterrent

I love the idea of putting a stop to the bush league bullshite that is faking injuries to get an extra timeout, but this...

Is a horrible idea.

UCF's chances of winning another national championship will be severely impeded if this rule is adopted.

This is like a decade behind.

Is this even a big issue anymore? I haven't noticed it lately.

Missing the rest of the drive seems like the best deterrent. You can legitimately say a player needs to sit out a few minutes and take time to assess the injury that knocked them out of the game. Only downside to this is now people will say theyre going to play thru injuries and be to dangerous for the players. If people had just been decent about this to begin with it would have been fine. Unfortunately people aren't decent all that often.

This is basically just making easier again for the offenses to go up and down the field like an arena league.

Make the linemen disengage 1 yard instead of 3 yards and 95% of this shite is fixed.

Eh. I'm not a big fan of this. Sometimes players legitimately have cramps that can easily be taken care of in one play or less. Kind of shitty if you're playing in a conference with high humidity or on turf where cramps tend be more frequent.

When I think of all of the things the NCAA needs to "fix", this is pretty low on the list.

This is stupid. I understand that faking injuries to slow the game down is bullshite, but making a team burn a timeout to get a player who cramped up back on the field is exponentially worse.

I think it's high time that college football players learn how to fake injuries with much better acting skills. Most of the time it isn't always well thought out and it's obvious they aren't practicing their craft. In the NBA and soccer, these guys work on all the little nuances that go into getting that stuff credible. Even down to the guard driving the lane and tey give that little head bob that gives just a hint of a foul, but says so much to the refs who just love to overreact. Football is strictly caveman stuff in comparison.

I believe a rule like this can up the ante on football players, everywhere, working on their fake injury craft. It's hightime folks.

I suspect the tipping point on this is when the cameras caught Kiffin and other Ole Miss coaches screaming at one of his players to fall down on the field. Everyone knows its done, but to be so blatantly obvious with it makes it hard to not address.

It’s a deterrent but what about guys who just rolled their ankle a bit or cramped?

Takes a few seconds to work out the pain and then ready to go.

They have to sit out potentially 5+ plays just because a few players across the league have faked injuries to slow the momentum (subjective btw) of the offense?

It would absolutely have killed our offense under Gran if someone like Snell or Bowden caught a cramp and couldn't play the rest of the series. Especially when they were running long, sustained drives to eat up clock.

It's essentially punishing everyone for the acts of a handful of players/coaches.

That's a different issue. That has to do with RPO.

This one has to do with HUNH not allowing the defense to swap out players.
