Something that isn't discussed about that. If ESPN is the one pushing those schools to the SEC, they're also going to void their media deal with the ACC due to the loss of value from the defections. Unless there's some reason ESPN cannot do that? A voided media deal makes the GOR worthless. ACC crumbles.
And those who say, "why would ESPN do that now and cost themselves more money?" Easy. Doing it this way secures the ACC schools they want most for the long haul, keeping them (especially UNC and UVA) away from the B1G.
And maybe ESPN ends up paying the same total amount of money or even less when 4 schools get a big SEC raise while the other 10 in the ACC get a massive cut (paid like Mountain West or AAC schools).

I feel like everyone agrees that Clemson is a reasonably good fit on paper but deep down nobody wants them here
A good fit culturally, but that has never been the concern of expansion for the last decade.
SC isn't that large of a state. Despite all of Clemson's success, SC is the larger school, with more fans, and is always ranked higher on the "most valued college football programs" list - whatever the hell those are worth. Clemson just isn't bringing in any surge of ratings or viewers etc. that would make it worth it for the SEC.
In sum, if Clemson were to come into the SEC tomorrow - each school would lose money if we had to split it 15 ways instead of 14. That's unlike adding two TX schools or the two Los Angeles schools for the Big 10 which are so large and have such massive fan bases that they can be added and still bring in more money after revenue splits.
ETA: The only way I see Clemson getting in is if there really does become a mad scramble between the SEC and Big 10 to basically become super conferences and are just adding teams to fill the ranks.

As long as the ACC doesn't dissolve (which would require a coordinated move on the part of a majority of the conference), I don't think the ACC schools are going anywhere for a while. I can't see how it's in ESPN's interest to do something that results in every ACC team being cut loose in order to add any four ACC teams you care to name, because one to three of the schools you don't take, and Notre Dame, will immediately run to the Big 10, and that would be a net loss for ESPN any way you cut it. Giving Fox and the Big 10 Notre Dame, and entree into the Southeast (the Big 10 would take Georgia Tech in a heartbeat if ND comes along too) would be a colossal own goal.

all the more reason to tell them "NO."

They have always been a football school in a basketball conference

It certainly seems like the best combination of longterm plays (brand, territory and growth potential) for the SEC are UNC, UVA, FSU and Miami
Agree; however, don't forget Duke....in all likelihood, wherever UNC goes, so goes Duke and vice-versa. They're like a package deal.

Yes, they do.

Clemson has long felt the ACC was biased against them down through the years
We were both the redneck stepchildren of the ACC. We were supposed to leave together. We had the nerve to leave. They stayed, and Clemson continued to endure the snot-nosed condescension of the UNC and Duke folks who ran the conference. Clemson, Duke and UNC can all rot.

Have to look at population growth trends. Nort and South Carolina bringing in many new residents each year.

Clemson might be one of the ugliest campuses I have seen in some time. My fiancée compared it to southern Alabama. Football complex was very nice though
That's not a common take, in my experience.
Country Living included it as one of its 25 most beautiful campuses in the south. LINK
I think Ole Miss's campus kind of looks like a UVA copycat.

I think it will go down with a TV market mindset. Best play for SEC would be to get into North Carolina and Virginia. So I think we target UNC and UVA. If UNC wants Duke to come, great. Those three schools get us into new markets and bring a lot of value in sports other than football, which I think is a plus.
We will need one more team to even it out. I don’t see UVA being hung up on VT coming with them. Don’t think they care that much. And who wants to travel to Blacksburg when you could spend a weekend in Charlottesville. No comparison.
So, I think that would leave us with a few options, Clemson being one. Something like this:
UNC
Duke
UVA
Miami/FSU/Clemson/NC State
Of those extras, I would want Miami most tbh.

But, but, but Clemson has a LAKE!!!!

I'll take a lake over a bunch of buildings with greek columns that look the same.
I looked at some pictures of South Alabama's campus. The buildings look more like Auburn and Ole Miss than Clemson.
I don't get the sense Clemson the university is desperate. I think generally the Clemson fans who want a move to the SEC didn't attend Clemson. I'd prefer for Clemson to stay in the ACC because it has all of our long time rivals other than SC, with 5 of them in neighboring states.

I think you hit the nail on the head with most of your post. They may actually save money by not paying for all of the “dead weight” in the ACC.

Not really. Nobody there give a shite about college football. They won't watch no matter conference or opponent.

Ya'll afraid your assertion that Clemson can't compete in the SEC will be proven wrong.

It most likely would boost Clemson's recruiting which is already very good, given the SEC hype. And our basketball team would probably make the tournament more often which would help recruiting.
I support having two different playoffs and leagues. the new SEC and BIg 10 could have their own playoff. Clemson and the other colleges could have their own called the Rest of Ya'll Playoff.
College football has become too SEC and BIg 10 centric. We need a divorce. Break up the monopoly rather than participate in it. Clemson and other colleges moving to the SEC is a cuck move.

No one is saying that. It’s not about competition, it’s about money.
We already capture the South Carolina market. You add nothing.
