Engineering, been over this already. Next question.
But...but...Texas supposedly has a better engineering program...

Based on the most recent US News rankings, all but one school in the SEC would kill to be in the top 50 and all but 2 schools (neither named Texas A&M) in Texas would kill to be in the top 50.
Rice is the premiere University in Texas followed by Texas and SMU. A&M is catching up, but the other 3 aren't just sitting around doing nothing.

if a&m can become the premier university in Texas it will be a huge victory for gay rights.
Every time I see this sort of nonsense I laugh my butt off, recalling the one event that made Corps Turds respect civilians. 1979. Gay Student Services Organization declared that <some random day in the school year> was "Blue Jean" day: Wear your blue jeans to show support for the GSSO. So a bunch of wanker civilian men's dorms had thousands of T-shirts printed up and they were everywhere: No fig is Getting Me Out Of My Blue Jeans. I had nothing but respect from then on for the longhairs.

Far reaching in what regard?
By a broader reach in the subcategories you mentioned in business. A&M has accounting and real estate. UT has accounting, finance, real estate, management, etc.. They have an incredible business alumni network.

agree that if you go to UT, you'll have an easier time breaking though in a field pertinent to a liberal arts degree.
Don't care about that.
quote:
But when it comes to engineering and business (two broad categories with a litany of subcategories), TAMU's "narrow" focus provides its students with ample opportunity.
A&M's alumni network in engineering is better from my experiences, I haven't had as many encounters with the engineering alumni networks for both schools but every good engineer I met from A&M got paid. Also alumni networks in engineering aren't as important for the reasons I already said. You have to know someone in some areas of business (referring mainly to finance) or be a rockstar.

What point is there in designating the network's focus as "narrow" when it concentrates on industries that provide the most jobs in the state?
Because generally jobs change over time, financial compliance used to be very low in hiring and now it is by far the fastest (and only) growing business in finance. The only constant is the economy goes up, the economy goes down, lawyers and accountants get paid regardless. UT has the former and its pretty close for the latter.

I've never understood why anybody cares about those sort of stats. (And that's not meant to pick on you in particular; many Aggies pull this crap, too.) You have to put it in context. I'm sure Rice and SMU are excellent... at some things. Engineering? I'm an old fart and I've never once met or heard of a Rice or SMU engineer. Not ever. Doctors and lawyers? Well, probably. On the other hand LSU takes a beating on this subject, but some of the smartest engineers I've ever met went to LSU.

I don't believe that for a second. UT's is good but A&M is better.

And why is it that we know TAMU doesn't have a strong network in finance and management?

And according to your experience with the big 4, TAMU has half of the constant on lock-down, yes?

Exactly.
And who knew there were so many state of Texas experts on the rant?
Good stuff.

Apparently things were different when you were there. In my day (75-79) I walked across campus to engineering classes with the same 2 guys every day. We had a game. In turn, one of us would say "Hi" or "Howdy" to approaching females. Any response at all including "Go to hell" got 5 points. No response at all, 0 points. Crossing the street before she got to us in an obvious attempt to avoid us: -1 points. First 3 years we all had negative scores. Always. And then we put on the boots. Completely different outcome which didn't do a thing to improve my impression of A&M females.

Chop full? Wtf? No wonder they think we don't belong in the SOUTH eastern conference... Now logout and go practice regional idioms in the mirror.

Read my post, very comparable.

So just to be clear, we're evaluating the two networks (together comprising probably 800k people)--and how one is conclusively stronger--based on your experience on Wall Street?

I'd say times have definitely changed Always got a response when I said "Howdy," to a female walking across campus.
Then again, I am hard to resist Seriously, good experiences though.
