As much as I hate UT, their alumni network is by far the best in the south for a public university. Virginia is up there along with Emory and SMU (both private) but McCombs is incredible with their alumni network. A&M is a great school but their network isn't really even comparable.

you literally have zero clue what you're typing do you... retarded insight right there.

What is with all this academic bull crap. If academics is so important then drop sports and focus on it. These are arguments Vanderbilt and Tulane would make against Tennessee and LSU. But LSU and UT are still the flagship schools of their own states.

Texas is the flagship school of Texas. Plain and simple.

Flagship schools: Tennessee, LSU, Oregon, Michigan, Washington, Texas.

Second Tier in state: Vanderbilt, Tulane, Oregon State, Michigan State, Washington State, Texas A&M.

To be the second tier school in Texas is still a big accomplishment. Playing the academic card is lame.

I'm proud that A&M is an AAU member but this is another nonsensical issue. AAU membership is based strictly on research studies. If a school turns out primarily lawyers and teachers and BA-type people, would you expect them to have a big research budget? No, of course not. Does that mean it isn't a good school? Again, of course not.

You're missing the point. This Pony is claiming that the three most premier universities in Texas are Rice, Texas, and SMU. You can't even be in the running for the overall Premier university if you're not considered to be among the most elite research institutions. It's a prerequisite for consideration which SMU lacks completely.

What are the most premier universities in this nation? If you made a list it'd be something like Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Brown, Princeton, Michigan, USC, UNC, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, MIT, Duke, Berkeley, Chicago... those are ALL AAU schools. They're all committed to big time research. SMU isn't. Being a research-focused university is necessary for being considered premier. That doesn't mean a school that isn't is BAD. Far from it. SMU is a GOOD school. But it's not a premier institution.

Well duh. Tulane and Vanderbilt are both private schools.

That is incorrect; but don't let a pesky thing like the truth get in the way of your solid effort.

No, UT Austin is ONE OF the flagship schools of Texas. They are the flagship of the University of Texas system. Texas A&M College Station is the flagship of the Texas A&M University system.

Unless you're using the term "flagship" colloquially, or as a synonym for "best". Then you're arguing that UTx will always be #1 because they are #1. The term for that particular logical fallacy is called "begging the question".

I really hate agreeing with a Tiger on any damn thing, but this is spot on.

No I'm not. The point is these rankings are ludicrous. It ain't football. I don't even know what SMU produces as that's way outside my and my family's resources, but I'm pretty sure they're very good at something and most likely better at it than A&M. Why do so many have a need to rank them?

And (getting wound up now) what kind of sense does the OP's question make? I know he was trolling, but sheesh. Texas is a very good school. It always will be and their athletic program will also be very good - always. So what? There's plenty of room for both schools and athletic programs. Stupid question, in my opinion. Of course the OP intended for it to be a stupid question, but many here don't seem to get that and are flipping out.

Vandy can't be considered Tennessee flagship university because it's a private institution. It's by no means 2nd tier because it isn't tFlagship.

The term "Longhorn network" doesnt even exist down here. Ask anyone in this state what college network is loyal to the point of being nauseating, you'll only get one response: The Aggie Network.

You know what's half the size of Louisiana? Houston.

Enough with the penis envy. We have 26 million people in this state, so we are probably safe to lay claim to more than one "top tier" university.

What exactly is "the" premier U in California?

Y'all should really read the entire thread before posting. I made my points on my views very clear.

This is exactly what I was saying about the narrow focus of the alumni network, but if you read the thread you'd know what I was saying. There are a lot of jobs outside of Texas.

There are a lot more jobs outside of Texas, many with higher salaries, prestige, etc.. The fact that you haven't read the thread before posting only points at one misinformed person here, man.
