In the wake of Zion Williamson’s announcement, there’s no denying Duke has passed Kentucky when it comes to landing the sport’s best stars; today, John Calipari took a shot at Mike Krzyzewski’s recruiting pitch, which he says is bogus.

“I don’t sell, ‘When you come here, the university and the state will take care of you for the rest of your life.’ You may buy that, and I’ve got some great property and some swampland in Florida to sell you too.”

quote:

“Kentucky’s pitch was just the NBA thing,” Diallo said. “Duke’s pitch was just like, if you come to Duke you’re going to be set for life. It’s more than just basketball.” Less than a month later, Calipari attacked the pitch in one of his famous “state of the program” blog posts.
“I refuse to go in a home and paint a picture saying things like, ‘If you come with us you’ll be taken care of for the rest of your life by the program and by our alums’ even though you may only be in school for a year or two,” Calipari said. “How preposterous does that sound? What if I say that same thing and the young man decides to transfer for one reason or another? Does that still hold true that we’re going to take care of them the rest of their lives?”

Maybe Calipari actually realizes that a Duke education actually holds value?

Great melt from the salesman.

Good on Calipari for being honest.

I actually think Cal is actually a pretty honest guy that would be cool to have a beer with when talking to recruits and others, and coach k is the slimeball a-hole.

I truly think everyone has them backwards in their minds

Why are you laughing? The recruit is the one that said what each coach told them.......

Cal actually shoots it straight to the media as well, Coach k fools everyone with his holier than thou bullshite

Wouldn’t any coach at a program with academics like Duke say the exact same thing? It’s a great recruiting pitch for them, if Cal could sell that he would.

Calipari seems mad that Coach K has evolved and is now beating him at his own game imo

I mostly agree. I'm not a huge Calipari fan but do think he seems more genuine.

The whole Duke perception as the wholesome college hoops blue blood is almost completely bullshite.

That isn't what the implication is from Coach Cal's perspective.

There is definitely some of this, even if he is being 100% honest.

Sure, but to 1 and dones it's stupid and completely false. They are enrolled in school for less than a year. They arent getting any education benefit.

It's really not hard to sell Duke over Kentucky in my mind.

Better education
Pretty much equal blue blood status
Better conference to play in (iron sharpens iron)
Cameron Indoor
Coach K is also more prestigious of a coach to play for than Cal

1 semester of duke education on a basketball scholarship doesn’t mean shite.

Ok, but it’s working. Whether or not they are going to take advantage of it, it’s a pitch they can make. You think if Cal was at Duke he wouldn’t be saying the same things? Of course he would, coaches use whatever recruiting advantage they can.

It’s not like these guys are going pre-med until they hit the NBA.. maybe general studies until they get that draft grade and then they are out. The education means nothing.

Plus you get to be in on the Duke/UNC rivalry. I'd take Duke over UK in a heartbeat.

But if shite hits the fan when they get to the NBA they can then typically go back to school to finish their degree.

I'd rather have Duke as my fallback option for an education than Kentucky.

What? You think the reason that they are getting the ones and dones is because of their academic pitch? Reread the quote "the state will take care of you for the rest of your life". You think the implication is getting your degree from a great school?
