Bo won a Heisman trophy.
Hershel won a Heisman Trophy and a National Championship.
Derrick Henry won a Heisman Trophy and a National Championship. In the same year. ALONG with the SEC Single Season Rushing Record.

Maybe we're having the wrong conversation.

As directly as can be compared. But, in college, McFadden wasn't good enough to keep his team in the top 25. Think about it. A modern era greatest RB of all time but not good enough to be a top 25 team? The others in the list were basically all the offense those teams had and they put their teams on their backs and won or contended for championships, much more difficult than being in the top 25. McFadden had some yards. But so what. Their backup averaged over 9 yards per carry his senior year as their OL was one of the best in the country. Yet, not top 25. There were a lot of reasons why McFadden didn't win the H trophy. Everyone acknowledged he was good, productive, and had some special games against non-top defensive teams. Almost no one acknowledged he was one of the best of all time outside of Arkansas fans.

The 05-07 teams were poorly coached and handicapped by a pedestrian passing game.

McFadden put Arkansas on his back because Nutt was doing what he could to run him into the ground. Other players had better coached teams with more innovative offenses which made easier to put up better numbers and win the heisman.

McFadden did get some help but he helped the likes of Felix Jones and Peyton Hillis more so than him. The offense line was one of the best in run blocking yes but in pass blocking they were below average.

McFadden was up against tough defenses but he was still going to get his yards. The best way is to slow him down, put Arkansas in third down situations and watch a very predictable Nutt playcall.

He is one of the best in Arkansas history just isn't as decorated as the likes of Lance Alworth or Dan Hampton.

McFadden is a better athlete than Smith but didn't play on any good teams and his running style led to more injuries.

Oh I don't know Herschel never lost an SEC Game, won 3 SEC Championships, Won a National Championship, should have been a two time Heisman winner. To me it isn't even close. It's Walker.

Herschel should've won multiple Heismans

Getting drafted into the black hole was the worst thing that happened for DMac. I've often wondered how different his pro career might have been in a somewhat balanced offense to keep defenses honest.

Funny that LSU never played against either.

This will be one of the most debated questions ever in SEC lore. Here we are almost 40 yrs since they played and still arguing over it.

1. Anyone saying that “it’s not even close” either way should remove themselves from the discussion.

2. I would add this nugget:

(From SB Nation)

While we all focus on BYU as the least likely/deserving/good national champion of the 1980s, the decade actually started with one of the least [your choice of adjective] we'll ever see. The Dawgs beat three Est. S&P+ top-20 teams by a combined 15 points. But they also played four teams ranked between 30th and 59th and won those four games by a combined 22. They finished the season having played just three teams that finished better than 6-5.

The SEC wasn't very good in 1980, with four of 10 teams ranking outside of the top 50. Plus, six-game conference schedules meant that you might miss a couple of the better teams in your given conference. Of the five best non-UGA teams in this relatively watered-down SEC, the Dawgs played just two, missing No. 5 Alabama, No. 22 Mississippi State, and No. 42 LSU.

***my thoughts***
Face it dawgs, HW was running against below average teams most of the time. That is why he did so well in the USFL. He shined against the second level of competition.

McFadden was a north and south runner, very little wiggle to his running. Running into piles and didn't really follow his blockers. He rarely bounced to the outside. Smith was a smarter runner and was far more productive.

I would done a controversial move and put him at free safety if I knew that his NFL career was going down the drain. I watched high school film of him on defense. He can hit hard and tackle from one end of the field to the other.

The man would have been making pro bowls each year.

I think Nick Chubb, Darren McFadden, Kevin Faulk deserve more love for their careers.

I also think that Fournette, Henry deserve more love for the numbers they put up in 2015.

Everyone always underrates more recent backs on these discussions.

Bo Jackson started in both The NFL's Pro Bowl and started the MLB's All Star Game and he lead off that game with a Homer. He's the only person to ever start both. His first at-bat after recovering from hip surgery he homered.

If that doesn't do it, just watch Bo Jackson vs Seattle in the King Dome. It's as good a performance that's ever been recorded as a RB in the NFL outside of Emmitt's 32 for 229 with a separated shoulder in the Meadowlands to win the Division.

Bo gained over 100 yards in only 1 of his 19 pro games.

I wish I had gotten a chance to see them play and have an opinion on this. Definitely 1a and 1b in terms of SEC lore. I’ll say this, if it’s a tie I’d give Walker the nod just for being a physical specimen 40 years later. Dude is from a different planet.

He beat the #1 rush defense in the country in the national championship game with a separated shoulder.

I think you are focusing on the wrong opponents.

Ask the pro-HOF in Canton, actually, he did.

had he gone to the NFL instead of making the groundbreaking decision to leave college early for the USFL and DONALD TRUMP’S money, then he’d likely be in the HOF
