On a neutral field Miami was 3 scores better than anybody in 1988.

Probably true, but Notre Dame was #1 going into the bowls. No way they were going to match up with the U again with their first shot at an NC in 15 years on the line.

There were a lot of great college football teams and players in 1988.

1. Miami was in its prime with Jimmy Johnson and would have won the national title had they converted the 2 pt. conversion in the 4th quarter at ND.

2. Notre Dame was very strong and won the national title under Lou Holtz. They had players like Tony Rice, Rocket Ismail, Ricky Watters, Michael Stonebreaker.

3. USC had a really good team with Rodney Peete at QB.

4. West Virginia was good with Major Harris at QB.

5. UCLA was good with Troy Aikman at QB.

6. Nebraska was still Nebraska.

7. Michigan had a really good team and played the hell out of both ND and Miami. Won the Rose Bowl.

8. Oklahoma was in its last year with Barry Switzer and the wishbone. Not quite as good as '85-'87 but still formidable.

9. Arkansas was good and played Miami to a 2 pt. game with Barry Foster at RB and Steve Atwater at DB.

10. Auburn had one of its strongest teams under Dye.

11. Florida State was entering its peak years under Bobby Bowden. Deion Sanders was on the team.

12. Oklahoma State was stout with Barry Sanders running all over the place.

13. Alabama was good with Derrick Thomas on defense.

You don't often see that many blue blood programs from coast to coast playing good/great football at the same time - plus a mixture of less prestigious programs riding all-time great players to banner seasons.

What if Spurrier never left Florida?

UF is the SEC’s all time #2 program by now.

Bama dynasty isn’t restored because Saban is still chasing his first Natty at LSU.

UGA probably on their 4th coach since 2001.

What if the hurricane game against LA Tech wasn't canceled and JFF debut in 2012 wasn't against a top 25 Florida team. What if in that game a A&M td wasn't called back on a shity call or if Sumlin hadn't called a TO only for the FL kicker to miss the fg, he made the second attempt and FL won the game by 3. Any of the above goes the other way and A&M more than likely plays for an NC in 2012.

What if Will Wade wasn't a dumbass and let someone else talk on the phone instead of him?
We don't get a 6 seed that year (below 3 other SEC teams although we were conference champs); we have our head coach for the tourney; and we don't face Mich. St, always a horrible matchup for anyone outside of the Big 10. Our team was stacked, and we conceivably get to the Final 4. With Wade's recruiting, maybe we become a national power.

I will go with one that is pre-Arkansas coming to the SEC but could have potentially had a big impact on the course of SEC football.

What if Bear Bryant, who was signed, sealed, and all but delivered, becomes the head coach at Arkansas in the 1940s instead of joining the Navy during World War II?

Bryant was a native of Arkansas after all, and unlike Kentucky he wouldn't have felt like he was being treated as a second class coach. At Arkansas he wouldn't have felt he was running a program that was at best a distant second place in state like he did with A&M (that isn't a dig at the Aggies, at the time they were, at best, a distant second place in Texas behind UT). He almost certainly would have been made the AD at Arkansas, which was a big factor in him going to Alabama.

For Arkansas it was the start of a loooong run of misery. We were mediocre at best and frequently down right awful before we finally found someone to right the ship and set things up for Broyles to come in and have a big run. Would Bryant have been able to change that?

The biggest what if is easily what if Tebow goes to Bama

That happens and Saban may never have gotten to Bama.

What if in 09 Florida rightfully loses to Arkansas? Does Urban leave earlier or stay?

Atwater dropped a pick in the end zone that would have won the game for us. Instead, Miami got to kick the game winning FG.

What if this was called correctly?

Just stop with this one. If it was called correctly, it was a Bama false start and the play never happens.

The bigger "What if?" is the missed false start on Bama's 4th down TD. If that's called, I can't see Saban going for it on 4th and 9. It certainly would have made it more difficult for them to convert.

Saban would have bagged quite a few national titles in Baton Rouge. No doubt.

Y’all may be right... Nick probably could have won more titles along the way if he’d remained with LSU. Five more? I dunno... no one in their wildest thoughts could have predicted the success Alabama has had. One cannot expect that and certainly can’t unequivocally state it would have translated elsewhere.

Plus, what if Alabama just hired him away from LSU instead of the phins... that would have REALLY gave the Tigger fans something to talk about!!

Bryant went to Alabama because Arkansas before Frank Broyles was Chad Morris bad for years. No history and no tradition. It was only until the 1954 season dubbed the 25 little pigs that the state of Arkansas took interest in college football. Before that no cared for the razorbacks and turned on the radio to hear the St. Louis Cardinals which ironically was the mascot before it was changed to the razorbacks.

Bryant would still go to Alabama as that is where he went to school. The reason he did attend is because no one cared for the razorbacks as the state were big into the Cardinals and also it didn't help that Alabama was a power even in that time.

Yes Bryant would be able to change the culture and just like Frank Broyles did but he would still leave for Alabama.

Can’t disagree with anything in that post. Bryant left aTm because it was “Mama”.

What would they have given him that LSU wouldn't?

There's nothing that Alabama can give an incoming head coach currently that LSU cant.

I realize that contradicts the Bammers circle jerk but lets keep it real.

That explains why you had to hire a Ole miss reject.
