2010 Alabama was absolutely stacked. Still don’t see how they lost 3 games with that talent.

2011 LSU was 13-0 and SEC CHampions. The other three never achieved that.

1995 UF (Nebraska)
2009 UF (Bama)

2000 Miami (Lost to UW early in season - Sooners won title over FSU)
2003 Miami (Lost to Buckeyes on a penalty from the stands)

1993 & 1994 Auburn?

The answer is 04 Auburn. It goes without saying that they would have played the semi pro USC team but I do think it would have been closer than the blood letting that occurred during the NCG.

1945 Alabama, with the great Harry Gilmer, went undefeated, won the Rose Bowl, and scored 50+ in 5 different games. They finished the season #2 behind Army.

Our best non-title team of the modern era is 2016. They were one stop away from being the original GOAT 15-0 team, but didn't finish it off.

one stop away or a couple of first downs away

I think it was 3 and out 9 times

2002 Miami, Coker is probably the worst coach to ever win a NC and he was very close to winning a 2nd in 2002. Think how much talent Miami had to have to put Coker in position to win two NC in a row,and go 24 and 0

I was going to bring up 2012 UGA too. Good team, and the 2012 SECCG may have been the best football game I've ever seen. It's definitely one of the best I've ever seen. There's no doubt they would have beat Notre Dame and won it all had they been able to beat BAMA.

A lot of good teams already listed. I'll add:

98 Ohio State
01 Tennessee
07 Oregon, before Dixons injury. They likely win it all since they would've played an average Ohio State team
2008 USC

The didn't care enough.

Saban hadn't figured out how to harness egos yet and have guys buying in for the good of the program.

They shouldn't have lost to South Carolina or LSU that season. And honestly, a team with more heart doesn't blow the big lead against Auburn, either.

2004 Auburn...

To all the people saying the 2013 Alabama team if not for the kick 6. The game was tied at 21 and heading to OT if the Kick 6 is not returned all the way.

Refresher: How did Alabama lose the 2010 Iron Bowl? The Mark Ingram fumble might have been a *bit* deflating, but why did the offense stall in the second half? The 2010 Auburn team wasn’t exactly known for stopping opposing teams from scoring.
