The radio call of Matt Jones to Birmingham to beat LSU in 2002 was beautiful

The GOAT Jack Cristil call.

It was during the Croom era - we were playing one of the blue bloods and nothing went right and we got our asses kicked. Sonic Drive in sponsored the Sonic Drive of the Game. We had been shut out, so there wasn't a significant drive. Jack in his classic voice - the Sonic Drive of the Game will have to be my damn drive home back to Tupelo!

Around the same time frame, we had a football/basketball doubleheader late in the football season and one of the first basketball games. We were pretty good in basketball at this time, so people would stick around to watch us play McNeese or whoever.

Jack Cristil had a smoky voice - because he smoked 3 packs a day. When he called Mississippi State basketball games, he preferred a higher vantage point, so MSU had a press table at the top of the lower level right amongst the fans.

I watched this exchange as it unfolded.

Jack is standing there waiting on the radio team to set things up, leaning against the wall. Fan and his young son walked up to him.

Fan: Son, this is Jack Cristil. He's a legend.
Jack: Nice to meet you young man.
Fan: Jack we love you. I hope you are around until son is playing for the Bulldogs.
Jack: Well, I do too!
Fan: We pray for you and hope you might stop smoking so you can live longer.
Jack: Well my dad lived until he was 95
Fan: Did he smoke?
Jack: No, he minded his own business.

These are not my fanbase, but:

Whoever the Florida radio guy is (I know he's done it for a long time and has the trademark "hoh my!") had an awesome call for Felipe Franks' hail mary in 2017 against Tennessee.

Probably not gonna make me a lot of friends here, but Gary Thorne's call in the 2005 Capital One Bowl was also pretty insane. I wish he commentated more college football.

Off the top of my head, I can remember some devin hester returns called by Brad Nessler being pretty cool as well.

Jack Cristil's 2008 Egg Bowl was incredible. For reference, this was Croom's last game and Ole Miss won 45-0 while State had 37 yards of total offense.

This was posted on this board several years ago but it's too good to not share again:

"The QB and the receiver weren't on the same page there, but hey its only week eleven."

"OM just scored and we don't know who scored because No. 85 isn't listed on their roster."
"But," Jack said, "It's academic at this point."

After an MSU holding call, "Well, if you can't block 'em, hold 'em!
"One can only hope so, Jack."
- John Correro

"It's third down and so long, you will need surveying equipment to see how much is needed for a first down."

"There are only 45 seconds left. Maybe ole miss wont score another TD. In the 1st quarter that is."

"Coming up on the end of the quarter. The third quarter, that is. We've still got another one to play. At the end of the third quarter, Ole Miss barely out in front, 38-0."

"Ole Miss has punted once today for a grand total of 12 yards. They ought to improve on that with this next punt."
(Laughter in the background as he was saying it)

"Let's punt it again. McAdams has to punt it a lot in his final game as a Bulldog."
"For the record both teams have all of their timeouts left. So, that ought to make it fun."

"Well, what do you know. The Rebels have put a couple of backup linemen in the game."
"Mercifully, the clock continues to run."

"About 3 minutes left, many fans have long been gone. In fact, some of them are probably already home by now."

"Chris Relf can throw it long. He cannot throw it accurately, but he can throw it long."

"Well, that's only a loss of 9 there. So, it's only third and 19."

"A great many of the 55,000 fans have left the game now (45-0), they might even be home now watching on TV".

"It's 4th down and 24 yards to go, this ought to dictate a punt right now".
"One can only hope so, Jack."
- John Correro

"Well, the Bulldogs take a delay of game. That backs them up to their 4 where it will be fourth and 31. We just wanted to McAdams plenty of room to kick the ball because he has such a powerful leg."

"That's it. Ballgame over. Ole Miss noses out Mississippi State, 45-0."

"Sonic drive of the game....My drive home to Tupelo, MS I guarantee you that is my drive of the game." then he proceeds to give his home address

Munson - "Edwards tightroping down the sideline" against Florida in 1997. Munson - "our hearts that were torn out and bleeding, we just stuck them back inside" for Hines Ward's gamewinner against Tech, also in 1997. Come to think of it, pretty much any Munson call. Ever.

The man was like poetry calling a game.

All those great Munson calls from UGA. Heard "Run, Lindsey, Run!" and "Oh you Herschel Walker!" About a million times. Munson was phenomenal.

I also remember catching a Miss St. game with Jack Christol where they got smoked by some team and in the post game he said "...and it's now time for the 'Sonic Drive of the Game', and as far as I'm concerned the 'Drive of the Game' will be my drive from Starkville to Tupelo tonight"

Paul Eels (RIP) had a lot of great ones for us back in the day.

Not necessarily the best but the one that sticks out the most was from Verne when we played at Florida in 2009. Mallett throws about a 30 yard pass to Greg Childs who runs 40 more yards to the endzone but fumbles as he's crossing the goalline and we recovered it for a touchdown.

Verne literally watches football for a living and he asked "Is that an incomplete pass?"

It's gotta be Larry Munson's "Hobnail Boot" call against Tennessee. I've never heard anything like it before or since!

“Touchdown! My God, a touchdown! We threw it to Haynes! We just stuffed them with five seconds left! My God Almighty, did you see what he did? David Greene just straightened up and we snuck the fullback over! … We just stepped on their face with a hobnailed boot and broke their nose! We just crushed their face!”

The guy was a true UGA homer, and one of the best broadcasters I ever heard.

The play is pretty well known, but I don't know if many people other than Alabama fans have heard the radio call. Eli Gold's call of the Tennessee @ Alabama 2009 blocked field goal aka, "Rocky Block."

YouTube

Honestly, Eli Gold was more excited during this call than the Tua game winner in the national championship.

The Ole Miss radio call of the end of the 2019 Egg Bowl is also something to behold. The shift from pure joy to total devastation in the matter of like 20 seconds is amazing.

For LSU, hands down, the unedited version of the Bluegrass Miracle. Jim Hawthorne starts screaming “Jack Hunt” when Devery Henderson catches the ball. Jack Hunt is white and wore No. 8 that season, Devery Henderson is black and wore No. 9. Jack Hunt may have even gone into that season as a receiver but he was switched to safety at some point that season before that game.

I’ll be fair and say it’s possible Hawthorne misread where his spotter was pointing on the roster or flip card or spotter board.

It's because he scripts what he's going to say at the end of National Championship games should we win. What should have gone down as one of the GOAT radio calls in Alabama football history quickly went to his scripted remarks. Hell every ESPN play call of it is better than his.

I make no secrets about it. I hate Eli as a play by play guy. I hope Chris Stewart's medical problems will not prevent him for taking over for Eli. The sooner the better.

Many fans remember JC Politz’s call of Billy Cannon’s 89 yard punt return and subsequent game saving tackle against Ole Miss in 1959, as it has been played over and over again on or about Halloween every year since. The LSU - Ole Miss rivalry was epic during Politz’s 2-3 years calling games. He was quite excitable and another call he made struck my fancy. After the referee spotted the ball near midfield following a short run, he said “the referee spots the ball on the Ole Miss, no LSU 50 yard line ... to tell you the truth, folks, I can’t tell whose 50 yard line it is”

Not totally unknown but Verne saying “onions” on like the 4th or 5th 4th down Miles went for it in 07 Vs UF is a classic moment in SEC Football. Including National Championships that is the most tension I’ve felt from a football game.
