Rodney Scott and Aaron Franklin are Beard award winners.
Franklin's in Austin gets all the attention, but those in the know will send you to Snows in Lexington.

What are some good places in Lexington County? My wife has relatives in Sumter so we’re occasionally up that way in SC.

No.

I’ve tried the Rodney Scott location in Birmingham and while it wasn’t horrible by any means, after all the hype I was rather underwhelmed.

I hate the Tide but love the BBQ in Tusca. Dreamland, for example.

Kansas City or Memphis.
Any other answer is wrong.

Probably a big city in Texas, Houston or Dallas, the days of great bbq being hidden in small towns is a thing of the past.
You’ll have access to a ton of places that can do the Texas staples really well, but then also have places with a cultural crossover. Unique stuff like beef cheeks or barbacoa at a Tex-mex place, or brisket boudin links at a Cajun inspired store.
Tons of variety in big cities now, lots to choose from.

Austin TX and surrounding areas and it's not close, this coming from an OU fan.

I would split this into 2 threads.
1) Beat BBQ you ever had.
2) Best all-round city for a variety.
Memphis owns pulled pork and dry ribs
Lockhart/Taylor//Austin owns brisket
Anyplace in SC owns wet ribs
Lexington NC owns vinegar
Where can you get the best of all of these? I think Dalllas is probably as close as you can get.

I disagree. There are some great restaurants down here in south Arkansas that cook outstanding barbecue.

I don't know if it is the best even in Arkansas but barbecue in Arkansas is underrated.

You can’t get good bbq on the safe side of town. True dives have the best food.

I just wish my part of Tennessee had decent bbq

I wouldn't say that's "the best" in context of the traditional southern style, but credit where credit is due, that's maybe the most unique BBQ scene in the whole state of Texas, and everyone commenting here should stop by there and experience it if they get a chance.
