Friends and I were talking earlier.
When's the last time you saw a charge get called in basketball?
I don't remember seeing a single one this year. Always getting the block called. I heard they were not going to call it as much. Guess they were right.

in most SC basketball games...Feels like they are calling them the same as they have been

There was an Arkansas player recently who was a master at drawing charges.

Charges aren't called much but I've seen it called. Typically when the ball handler is lowering the shoulder

To comply, defenders have to establish position so early that college athletes can easily sidestep. Essentially, it only leaves the blocking fouls to call.

Charges are annoying when they get called because you know damn well it probably should have been called multiple times earlier in the game and they choose to only call the inconvenient one that goes against your team

Charges are way down considering this fricking flopper is now gone

IF they lower the shoulder or extend the off arm, it’s called.
I saw it in a game last night.
It was either Milwaukee-Oakland or CoC-Stony Brook

I’ve seen several charges called this year. Seems to be no different in the past. Some are still bad calls, but calls nonetheless.

Yep, was hoping someone had this already.
As an official it makes it much easier to call.

The new rule
Here's a recent article about it. (AP)
quote:
The NCAA took a stab at clarifying block-charge calls with a new set of guidelines for the 2023-24 season.
A defender now must be in position at the time the offensive player plants a foot to go airborne for a shot. If the defender arrives after the player has planted, officials have been instructed to call a block when there’s contact. Secondary defenders also have to be outside the restricted arc to draw a charge.
Previously, defenders only had to be in position to draw a charge before the offensive player went airborne.
As a result, all those instances of sliding in front of a driver, secondary offenders jumping in the way at the last second or undercutting a player already airborne are now automatic block calls.
The numbers back it up.
Alabama (91.1) and Arizona (90.1) are the first teams to average more than 90 points per game since Gonzaga in 2020-21. The number of teams averaging at least 80 points per game has increased from 18 last year to 44 this season.
The NCAA doesn’t differentiate types of offensive fouls, but the eye test has been pretty clear so far.
“I think what you’re seeing is more scoring at the rim,” Arizona associate head coach Jack Murphy said. “Defenses have had to adjust. Way more vertical contests and less bang-bang plays at the rim that are 50/50 block/charge. I think it’s been good for the game.”
It definitely was an adjustment.
“It’s similar to league basketball or European basketball where you need to be there way earlier. You can’t really flop as much and just get the call. Used to be, you could just fall and they would call a charge.”
Not anymore — and the game seems to be better for it.

I think also they have to be out a few feet from the goal or its a block no matter what.

Wish they would just do a no call unless the foul is obvious.

I should clarify. I think I meant on layups. I actually have seen charges like you said.. I guess I mean on layups/dunks/plays at the basket where the ball handler is coming into the paint and the defender is standing for the charge.

I don't even watch that much basketball and I've heard it mentioned in several games this year that they had changed the rules to make it more difficult to draw a charge.

We used to get a lot of charge calls, and have a charge wall when our bball players take them. The calls have pretty much gone away with the new rule changes that happened last year. They seemed to think the rules before were too lenient I guess.

Defenders have to be outside the restricted area (a four-foot arc from the center of the basket) to draw a charge.

What I don’t understand is how the player dribbling the ball can use his other hand and keeps pushing to defender away from him. Without getting any call.
