As I mentioned, just the early stages of the war could be a great thriller without being a full on war movie.

Go back and forth between the colonists and their anger towards the crown with the bills they passed vs the picture in England and how they were getting fed up with these “rebels” who dared defy them.

The skirmishes in Lexington and Concord were because Colonists were stashing up arms and cannons in secrecy, the British caught wind of it, Gage wanted to send out a company in the dead of night to go seize them. The Colonists had spies, hence Revere and Dawes heading out to warn them and to warn Hancock and Adams.

The British get to Lexington, a little skirmish breaks out, then they head to Concord when a little bit larger skirmish breaks out. During this time, minutemen across the area are forming in mass across the region. The militia beat them back at Concord, they’re all like “holy shite, we just did that, they’re retreating, I guess it’s on men.”

By the end of the morning there were about 4,000 minutemen in the area. The British were smoked until Percy showed up to save them with another thousand men and 2 cannons.

Regardless, they harass the British all the way back to Boston using Indian tactics of hiding behind walls and trees to pop out and shoot. It pissed off the British so badly they began looting and shooting civilians. It was essentially the “Mogadishu Mile” for the Brits. They were dog tired and exhausted getting shot at all day. We chased them all the way back and began the siege of Boston.

That in itself could be a great film. Build up the tension, the “shot heard round the world” is fired. Colonists leaders are like wow, so it begins, then it ends with like a “here we go, we’re doing this” type ending.

The majority of “battles” were more like skirmishes, but man the drama is there and the tension that built up to them.

I’m reading Rick Atkinson’s “The British Are Coming” and I’m only through the battles of Lexington and Concord. But man there is so much drama and intrigue just in that single day of fighting. It’s so good.

Paul Revere and William Dawes riding to warn Sam Adams and John Hancock, the militia assembling in the thousands from the countryside, the British burning and shooting up houses, General Percy saving them and the British retreat back to Boston.

Why the hell do we not have more stories shown on film or miniseries?
