Barrot Trotter and Kiehl Frazier as follow-ups to Cam Newton.

He was a totally inept HC.

I dont give him that label. The coaching job he did in 2010 was nothing short of miraculous. The guy held that team together all season with more scrutiny than any team in college football history

He didnt develop the program, he had not control of the team after but few could have held that team together for a 14-0 Natty.

If you look at his seasons, the 2012 was really the only failure. He took over a 3 win program in 2009. Totally changed the offense and defense and went 8-5 with a Outback bowl win. Then 2010 happened. 2011, Auburn started the season less 40 players from the 2010 team. Losing a generational QB, the entire offensive line and most of the defensive line. Losing 40 players to graduation, early NFL and Jail, is tough to rebound from. Once again, 8-5 with a Peach bowl win

Then 2012 happened and it was a nightmare. He lost control and the leash was short.

I dont think Gene is a good choice for a major SEC program head coach but at a smaller program, he may do well. He is also a excellent defensive coord which is probably where he should have stayed

But in 2010, he was fantastic

Nice breakdown, thanks. I think as key as Cam was that experienced O line. They dominated.

He was a 5-19 bum, who never should’ve been hired, that went 19-19 without Cam Newton.

Short answer… He blinked.

Someone got in his head and convinced him that the systems he had in place and the coordinators he had hired were ill-equipped to take on the new juggernaut in Tuscaloosa.

Just like Coach O, he got a little full of himself and tried to control every aspect of the program instead of delegating and he lost control and respect from his players.

Unlike Coach O who is a bit of a derelict, pussy hound, and generally morally corrupt human being, Gene is a good dude and a loyal family man and good dad, he just rose to the level of his own incompetence. I really like him on the SEC network. No regrets. He gave us a Natty and I’ll always love him for that.

I forgot that he had such a poor record at ISU before AU hired him. Kind of hard to believe that happened. You almost never see a coach move upwards in a situation like that.

What was his record at ISU? I thought that was a bad hired. Same thing with Orgeron. What did Orgeron do to deserved the HC job?

I remember Finebaum going off about the hire of Ed O by LSU. He said ...." And LSU hired a guy to coach just because he really really wants to be the coach at LSU" LMAO

He got a lot of credit for being DC on 2004 Auburn and 2005 Texas. His ISU tenure was written off as “Well, no one does well at ISU, but at least he’s got some experience at the head coaching position.”

My wild conspiracy - I contend that someone in the AD or some big booster wanted Gus at AU but knew he wasn't ready to be a head coach. Chiz was hired as a vehicle to bring in Gus and let him grow and mature. When it appeared Chiz was headed for a disaster, Gus was told to separate himself from the situation and that he would be brought back once the mess was disposed of. Gus went to ASU for a year while the program collapsed from within and then was brought back to coach a fairly talented roster full of kids suited to run his O.

Familiarity is all the PTB was worried about at the time. Hence, the Gus hire. Then they TRIED to do it AGAIN by promoting DC Kevin Steele. Glad those days are GONE. Harsin is just the type of guy we needed.

I think early successes are the downfall of a lot of coaches. Egos get out of control. I've seen it happen 3 times at AU: Bowden- 20-1-1 in his first 2 seasons, and became an egomaniac. Chiz- after year 2, he put out a book, etc. And then Captain Idiot Malzahn- who caught lightning in a bottle in year 1.

He took coaches for recruiting not for x's and o's. Then at the end he tried changing offensive philosophy from a spread team to an I formation team much like alabama and lsu were running.

This was the postmortem that I heard from sports pundits in the year following his departure.

Likewise O tried to change the defense scheme in the face of massive losses of players to the draft and coaches to new opportunities. Add covid to the mix and toxic political issues and became a total collapse.

Many said he felt he didnt get enough credit for 2010 and felt animosity about it.

He also lost the team with the bad coaching as well as off the field things like hiring security guards to watch the players outside of football

Lack of discipline from not just Chiz but any of his assistants. Chiz didn’t hold players or assistant coaches accountable. They coddled players and treated them like they were their homeboys which led to players running roughshod.
It went from one extreme (Trooper chumming it up with his homeboys) to the other with an all out player revolt because they were being treated like early teens on house arrest. Tim Jackson types and security detail breathing down their necks and imposing strict curfews. Hell, most of those players had never experienced a strict upbringing in their own homes before they came to college.

After the Felony Four hit their lick and went to jail + Michael Dyer kicked out + two horrible deaths in shootings Chizik simply wanted to protect his players, period. He did the best he could, they just wouldn't take to his protection approach.

Chizik is the best TV analyst in the business and that's were he needs to stay.

I think many others here summed it up.

As a head coach, he is a great SEC analyst. I think he is in the perfect spot.

I would think working the network is much less stress and hope he enjoys it for a long time.

If I recall correctly, there was a ton of anger when he was hired and anger at his performance the year he was fired. Now, I would say everyone looks on him pretty favorably.

I wonder if the same thing will happen with O. The biggest difference is none of the off the field stuff involved the HC's personal life.

Chizik was a good man and still is. To this day I credit Gus as much or more for that championship. He brought a system that was new at the time and was extremely difficult to defend. He even turned Chris Todd into a decent QB in 2009.
