Home Run Hire in Tuscaloosa. Avery Johnson's a friend that I covered while he played at Southern. Without CBB experience but connected.

Bill Battle clearly felt it was imperative to get a recognizable name. Avery's definitely that, and will do a great job. Congratulations.

No idea how Avery Johnson will do in W-L's, but he will say more to the media in his first 15 minutes than UA hoops has done in 6 years.

This. The resident trolls and Bama homers are both way left and right of center. It's a TBD hire in terms of the actual program's success (5/10), but a great hire in terms of fan excitement (9/10).

I think the majority of the Bama fanbase thinks this. We all know that coaching hires are all TBD including Avery Johnson.

Honestly, I thought Grant was a homerun if any. However, he failed in the personality/excitement factor.

What a terrible hire, you thought Anthony Grant was bad. Hiring Avery Johnson is essentially the same thing as the 49ers hiring Mike singletery. I've never understood how an athletic director would hire someone who can't keep a job, Bruce pearl is laughing his arse off right now.

I appreciate your post being level headed, but still, y'all are so wrong here.

Alabama has been to the tourney 1 time since 2006. And this was a bad hire?!

Yeah, so tell me what all Gruden learned as a grad assistant back in 1986 that he would have been able to apply to his college coaching philosophy in 2012.

How to run a practice. How the staff prepares practices/time teaching the players. How recruiting is handled. How the staff handles their different responsibilities. When you have been on a college staff, in any capacity, you learn how things at the college level work. When you have never been on a college staff, you have to have somebody else teach you how it works. Like I said earlier, it may be a great hire. IF Auburn had hired AJ, I would have some serious reservations about it. It is just as likely it will be a huge failure as it is that it will be a huge success.

I agree. Could turn out to be great or bad. Right now he's an unknown at the college level. Looks like he's getting their fan base excited which means a lot.

You are getting a guy who in Dallas had massive trust issues, an ego the size of the moon, and was so paranoid he banned Dirk Nowitzki's personal shooting coach from Maverick facilities. He forced out assistants b/c he thought he could do it on his own. He blamed players for everything wrong while taking credit for everything positive. He alienated every single player and damn near every single member of the Mavs organization in his brief stint as HC. He wore out his welcome so completely that he was only able to last 3 full seasons and was canned just 2 years after coaching the team in its first NBA Finals. The players had such little respect for him that most of the team went out to celebrate Josh Howard's birthday in NOLA during the middle of a playoff series instead of staying at the team hotel. He coached an EXTREMELY slow brand of basketball which artificially raised the team's defensive stats while running an offense (once he booted Del Harris) that was so predictable that teams didn't even need to change their defensive gameplans from game to game.

Have fun.

I didn't call it a bad hire. I called it a great hire for fans, and a "we'll see" hire for the program. It's the trolls shitting on it.

Sorry you are struggling with a lot of people's opinions. A Bama fan posted this on the SECRant and open to discussion. NGT and I both think it is a great hire for recognition and splash value. To say it is great for win and losses is just being dishonest and too early to tell.

Assistant hires will be critical and I personally think his personality could play well in the living room of players and their families. We will see.

No. I hate college basketball and will not have fun.

Doesn't change that I think people hating on the hire are complete idiots though.

In the NBA Final, he went up against Pat Riley who is basketball royalty. Mark Cuban is fickel. Avery wasn't getting it done in Brooklyn. However, it wasn't all his fault. That franchise has been in dismay for awhile. He was coach of the month when he was let go.

Obviously, Gregg Popovich was Avery's Coach and mentor. However, I wouldn't think that Gregg would go out of his way to say the following unless there is some truth into it:

quote:

“Of course, many of us were surprised to see what happened in Brooklyn. From my perspective, Avery’s not a good coach, he’s a very good coach. He’s a hell of a coach. He’s proven that. There aren’t too many of us out there who have ever won 67 games in a season. He’s taken a team to the Finals. If my memory serves me correct, he was Coach of the Month. It sort of shows what a fickle, volatile business we’re in. We all know that. Avery knows that, too.
“Often times, situations like that have nothing to do with the ability of the coach. It has more to do with circumstances. We’ve seen it before. I can’t help but think sometimes a little patience could go a long way.
“You think about coaches … I believe Dean Smith, they did a little effigy in his honor in the beginning when things weren’t going well. Johnny Wooden had a rough patch in the beginning. Mike Krzyzewski, arguably our best coach we have in basketball today, things didn’t go very well in the beginning. He had an AD who was smart enough to know what he had. He exhibited a lot of patience, so now you see where Coach K is. I think we all understand that. But circumstances, especially in the NBA, have a whole lot more to do with firings than how well or how poorly a coach did. It’s unfortunate. But we all move on, including Avery."

Avery was not fired in Dallas b/c Cuban is fickle.

He was fired for pissing off the entirety of the organization by acting like a dictator. You can't alienate everyone and keep your job in the coaching world. Avery has done it twice now. Hopefully for you guys he has learned to not be so paranoid and ego driven.
