Why does everyone think this is far off based?

Because coaching in the NFL and coaching in the NBA is not even close to the same thing.

Are you ignoring the fact Avery has zero years of college experience and only 8 years in the NBA? Gruden has coached in college and runs an elite QB camp.
Holy frick, who gives a shite? This isn't football. He won't have to recruit 25+ kids a year. It's fricking basketball. And an extremely slow paced and boring version of basketball. He doesn't have college experience? Good

Am I completely lost when it comes to college basketball? Why the frick is everyone shitting on this hire?

Because they spent so much time talking shite about our coaching search and hoping that we'd fall on our face with it that they are trying to convince themselves that they were right.

The reality is this is a homerun splash of a hire.

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are the biggest racists around. Keep carrying around that white guilt though.

Gruden actually won his division two more times after the Super Bowl victory.

He also won the division two times as Raiders head coach. Does that count in your scorecard?

Btw I am not against the hire and think it is an intriguing one. You may be overhyping the hire, but it could turn out to be a good one.

Gruden cut his teeth in the college game. He had actually been on a college staff. Avery Johnson has never been on a college staff in any capacity.

Gruden spent a total of 4 seasons in college (1986-1989) and 2 of those were as a grad assistant. One year as a passing game coach and another as a WR coach. Neither at a Division 1A school, much less in a power conference.

It's the rant.
I get that but we're talking about Alabama basketball here. I think its a great hire for them. Who the frick was that last guy for Tennessee? Who the hell is LSU's coach? Does he have any idea how to coach? I have no idea. Is he better than Avery Johnson?

It's not like Duke just got a meh hire today. Why are people making fun? There's literally zero reason to hate on Avery Johnson coaching at Alabama

But he learned the strains of the college game. In pro sports, it's all about that sport. That's what all of the time is spent on. In college, kids have classes to attend. The NCAA limits the number of hours that can be spent in practice. There is a HUGE difference....not to mention, in bball, the NBA game and the college game are two very different games.

Gruden had college coaching experience (including at Tennessee) and a strong connection to the school.

Also much more visible nationally imo.

Being the color guy on MNF =/= NBA Coast 2 Coast analyst.

JMO.

My point is that they are both high visibility coaches. Of course, MNF gets more viewership than Coast 2 Coast. However, if your a basketball fan. You know Avery Johnson.

For all this Gruden has experience as an assistant coach and has a elite qb camp talk. It is easy to counterpoint that Avery has won a league coach of the year title and an NBA title as a player. Gruden hasn't won as a player nor the coach of the year. I understand he won the Super Bowl. But like I said its a similar hire. Let's not split hairs.

We all know the reality.

This. The resident trolls and Bama homers are both way left and right of center. It's a TBD hire in terms of the actual program's success (5/10), but a great hire in terms of fan excitement (9/10).

Yeah, so tell me what all Gruden learned as a grad assistant back in 1986 that he would have been able to apply to his college coaching philosophy in 2012.

Avery was just the first to respond to the flyer in the mail saying Bama had an opening.
