They are all ecstatic about this. For other reasons though. They don't have to worry about him being their next coach for at least a couple of years now.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out. It's a great hire in the sense Bama fans needed a hire to keep interest after not getting and/or not going after the 4 good coaches available. A TBD hire in terms of his interest in kissing parents, AAU and booster arse.

Will either put the final nail in Bill Battle's coffin or completely change fan perception of him if it works out. Same thing happened with Mal Moore and the Saban hire. Went from "Malfunction Moore" to beloved as AD because of the Saban hire.

Will be fun to watch play out.

Avery Johnson has a pulse and a personality.

No one really respects your opinion much anyway. Love the melt though because it's killing your father Larry.

I will watch and listen but Gruden was an accomplished NFL coach and Avery doesn't come close to that in comparison.

I will listen and see how many compare him to Gruden though.

Gruden coached two NFL teams and has an overall record of 100-85 (.541). Won a Superbowl with Tampa Bay, but couldn't sustain success and was eventually fired. Then became an analyst for ESPN.

Avery Johnson coached three NBA teams and has an overall record of 254-186 (.577). He took the Mavericks to the NBA Finals, but couldn't sustain success and was eventually fired. Then became an analyst for ESPN.

Tell me more about how UT hiring Gruden would have been so much different.

He's no Johnny Jones. That's for sure.

Would be the equivalent of Gruden taking the UT job a couple years ago.

Why does everyone think this is far off based?

Avery = 50 years old.........Gruden = 51 years old.
Avery = Took team to Finals.......Gruden = Won Super Bowl
Avery winning percentage = 57% Gruden win percentage = 54%
Avery = 0 CBB HC games.... Gruden = 0 CFB HC games
Avery = Broadcaster.......Gruden = Broadcaster

It's a very similar hire. I'm not saying that it is a homerun or anything like that. It's a mixed pot. However, I would say that it is close to a Gruden hire.

Are you ignoring the fact Avery has zero years of college experience and only 8 years in the NBA? Gruden has coached in college and runs an elite QB camp.

Gruden has a legit coaching tree underneath him too.

How is this a meh hire?

He took the Mavericks to the finals and won NBA COY in 2006 THEN won 67 games in 2007.

He's been on tv so kids know him. This is a damn good hire.

Gruden had college coaching experience (including at Tennessee) and a strong connection to the school.

Also much more visible nationally imo.

Being the color guy on MNF =/= NBA Coast 2 Coast analyst.

Gruden cut his teeth in the college game. He had actually been on a college staff. Avery Johnson has never been on a college staff in any capacity.

I will wait to see who's on his staff but seems like a very strange hire to me.
