And Gus had 8 years. I know we were grumbling back in 2016 already. They should've let him walk to Arkansas if that was really an option. He didn't accomplish anything after that extension.

When was the last coach from Auburn that didn't get fired? Shug Jordan? So call me skeptical.
He'll definitely need a top 10 class next year, and probably need a lot of transfers. Otherwise y'all are gonna fall behind. I bet the east has never looked more appealing.

Again, go through the SEC and tell me how many coaches who are no longer there left on their own terms.
Gus and Chizik were fired after they were given extensions. We don't know his contract yet, but if it's 4 or 5 years, I think Harsin will be that much time.
I don't have to tell you how lucky you are to have Saban and that stability. It's not luck really, it's just where you are. The rest of us do what we have to do to try and look like we are keeping up.

I’m concerned for sure. The SEC West isn’t meant to be a proving ground. Obviously I hope Harsin can do it but I doubt it.

Not sure why Alabama gets credit for Price being a shitbag and Francione fleeing the NCAA disaster that was coming, but that seems to be the argument being made.
ETA: in my lifetime Alabama has had 7 coaches and Auburn has had 6. Auburn has never had a run like the tide did in the early aughts of Dubose>Fran>Price>Shula. Fortunate for Alabama the price of failure was cheaper those days

I believe Harsin knew he had to have SEC experience on his staff, so he hired 4 SEC seasoned guys which should help tremendously.

Saban has been at Alabama for nearly 15 years. Coaching contracts were not completely insane in 2007, but trending that way. I’m not even sure buyouts were remotely done like they are now. And they certainly weren’t as astronomical.
Shula got a buyout of $4 million total. That would have ended sometime in 2011 if it wasn’t a negotiated lump sum or offset by his subsequent NFL employment. But I don’t even remember. Regardless, it’s not something Alabama has had to deal with. Ever. Not the way some programs are being hamstrung these days.

In terms of being concerned, the timing of the coaching change was not ideal for recruiting this year, and that's showed, but I think they've done a pretty good job putting together as good as class as could be expected given the circumstances.
I really like Harsin's resume and I think he's put together a very good staff, but time will obviously tell if that translates to wins. I think he'll develop the players better than Malzahn did, specifically QB's and offense. He's said all the right things and again, time will tell what that translates into, but it's a breath of fresh air compared to what he had with Malzahn and I think most fans are pretty optimistic about the next few years.

Yeah, these new high price buyouts are relatively new since the last probably 6-7 years. It's all part of the landscape being as competitive as it is now and the kind of money being thrown around. Coaches go into these jobs with the leverage knowing that if they're fired, they'll get theirs.

Given how long he has been on the job, and th restrictions he had with COVID, I'm very pleased. We honestly don't know how many of the players committed to Gus will work in Hartsin's system. They could have been total mismatches.
He knows the roster, and he knows what he's looking for to make his system go. He will find the right pieces.
At least he didn't arbitrarily inflate the class rating by signing 16 four star WRs, most of whom won't ever see the field.
