Anyone Else Think That The "Hail Flutie" Game Is Overrated?

I remember watching that game. It was a really cool ending and I enjoyed watching it.
That said, I still cannot understand how a final play hail mary pass by a 7-2 team to beat an 8-3 team in front of approximately 30,000 fans is given such status as "one of sports greatest moments". (I am sure I have seen at least 10-15 last play hail marys since that one).
Tonight they are "celebrating" the anniversary of that game.
Again, it was a cool ending, but nowhere near a Kick Six, 4th and 26 or Bluegrass Miracle.

I agree. The gave was a 10 vs 12 not even a 1 vs 2. There have been way better moments since that game.

Has to be overrated because I've never heard of it.

Did the Dallas Cowboys have the first Hail Mary and the term coined on that play?

Yeah, it was between two teams that weren't in the national championship race.
But, it was already an exciting game before Flutie's game winner. It was the first real quarterback duel. Prior to that play, the game had gone back-and-forth all night. Quite exciting. Before the pass, it seemed that Bernie Kosar had won the Heisman that night; he was that good in the game.
Just like the Kick-Six, there's a lot more to that game than its most famous play.

It was only cool because Flutie was 4.5' tall. It was a life size image of him on the family size Flutie Flakes box.

Anyone else remember Auburn losing to New Mexico State by 21 points last weekend?

He wouldn't have won the Heisman without it.

I watched that game. It was a great back and forth game with a great ending. To say I disliked Miami would be a huge understatement.
When Miami took the lead I was pissed but the Hail Mary cured that and I remember celebrating. Great game and I was young, great memories.
I think if I didn’t have such disdain for Miami it wouldn’t have meant that much.

Correct. He won the Heisman with that play.

Not saying it's the only reason. Had a great senior season and was considered one of the faves before the play. But that play pushed him to the top.

What folks forget is that the game before that one, Miami blew a 31-0 halftime lead to Maryland and lost 42-40.

No. The voting was done/in before the game started.

Are you surprised a team from the northeast got attention completely outsized to what they merited???

This is a good opportunity to realize that almost all of sports "lore" is just media replaying things the current crop old people remember as if it really mattered.

I acknowledge the SEC as the gold standard of conferences, but the historical and national knowledge of this great game is lost upon too many in the fanbases.
Read up and realize you didn't get 60+ televised games a week back then, fraction of that & this was defending against defending champions Miami on center stage the day after Thanksgiving in a national broadcast with Brent Musberger on the mic.
My old boss called and committed to play @ BC the day after the game and he was holding offers from most all the bigs in the midwest and east coast region.
This was a big moment in CFB history.
Hail Flutie

It wasn't just that game. It was how Doug Flutie played. The guy was a playmaker and this simply capped it off.
It was a great game, however.
