This includes the years, 1936-2023, a total of 1,233 polls taken by the AP.

Thirteen of sixteen SEC members have been ranked #1 at least one time in the AP poll since 1936. That....is.....phenomenal.

The number of appearances by each school is in parentheses ().....

1. Alabama (140)
2. Ohio State (105)
3. Oklahoma (101)
4. Notre Dame (98)
5. USC (91)

6. Florida State (72)
7. Nebraska (70)
8. Miami-FL (68)
9. Georgia (51)
10. Texas (45)

11. Florida (41)
12. LSU (38)

13. Michigan (36)
14. Michigan State (29)
15. Army (27)

16. Clemson (25)
17. Penn State (21) & Pittsburgh (21)
19. Minnesota (18) & Tennessee (18)

Other SEC schools...........

23. Auburn (9)
25. Texas A&M (7)
30. Ole Miss & Mississippi State (5)
38. Missouri (2)
41. Arkansas (1)

EDIT: Kentucky finished #1 in 1950 in the Sagarin Ratings and is recognized as a national champion in the NCAA Official Records Book; however, the Wildcats have never been ranked #1 in any AP Poll during the season or in its final poll.

In 87 years Auburn spent a total of 9 weeks as number 1? That's quite surprising.

We have a history of underperforming when having high expectations and over performing when having low expectations.

We were supposed to be alright in 2010 and didn’t get to #1 until the very end.

We were supposed to be awesome in 2003 and shite the bed.

That’s how we roll.

We’ve been historically bad in this statistic. In both of our national title seasons we spent the entire season moving up the ranks, but only attained #1 in the final two polls.

That's expected. And I could see Alabama being around #5 before Saban landed there, which I'm guessing the math will bear out.

Testament to what Miami and Fla State did in the 80's and 90's, and Nebraska on a solid pace until the program collapsed. Kinda surprised Texas is this far back, considering the hype they always get.

Never in a million years would I guess Michigan would be so far back on the list.

Some interesting things there: I thought Tennessee may be a bit higher. And I do remember the Pitt/Penn State rivalry going back to Tony Dorsett, but I would have expected there to be some seperation. I know Penn State usually didn't get to #1 like Ohio State or Oklahoma, but I THOUGHT they would have been ahead of Pitt most of their history.

I would have thought Arkansas got there more than once. They seemed to have some history, back in the 60s and such.

Crazy to think there have been several of these teams win national titles while only being ranked No. 1 for a single week (the final poll)

I guess we have to remember it was a popularity contest before the BCS. You might see an SEC team at #3, while Oklahoma, Miami etc (whoever was popular) would be 1 and 2.

Another example of how the West was better than the East.

For 1964, while Alabama was declared the AP Poll Champion (poll taken BEFORE the bowl game which the Tide lost), Arkansas was declared the UPI Poll Champion (poll also taken before the bowl game which Arkansas won).

Arkansas' lone week at #1 in the AP Poll was on October 18, 1965. They defeated previously #1 Texas, 27-24, but fell to #2 the following week despite winning the following week, 55-20, over North Texas. Strange voting by the pollsters there, for sure.

Arkansas (UPI) and Alabama (AP) share the 1964 national title along with Notre Dame and Michigan (ranked #1 by other polls/rating services).

This absolute OU legend made a great contribution to the OU numbers

From KREF Sports this morning:

Happy Birthday to Bud Wilkinson!

Born in 1916, Bud was the OU head coach from 1947 to 1963, compiling a record of 145–29–4.

He won three national titles, 14 conference titles, but his greatest coaching feat is the 47-game win streak from 1953-1957, which still stands as the longest streak in college football history. We salute you Bud.

Ever notice in stats, good or bad, OM and State are almost always neck and neck. It’s like we have to copy one another

Just like OM winning baseball natty a year after us. It’s like neither school can stand the other to get ahead in anything so we remain deadlocked in everything

LSU on the Alabama bandwagon

LSU fan mentions that West had more teams reach #1 in the polls than the East.

Bama fan thinks it’s somehow about him. Seek help. You have the entireSEC office, referees, local police force, ncaa office, review officials, media etc all paving the way for Bama. You have the best player from every state while the rest of us use our own state. Your rankings are tainted. But anyway, yeah back to the subject of my post Western teams > East.
