Winning percentage? Schedule strength? BCS titles and bowl wins?
In another thread yesterday, there was debate over the CFDW rankings because of how points are awarded for national titles and "big 4" bowl wins.
What say you?

The best method i've been shown so far is just to use whatever makes your team look better.

Just amazing. I put both of our conference rivals (3 if you include LSU) ahead of us, and people still bitch.

What's a good way to rank cfb programs historically?

1. All time wins
2. SOS
3. # of weeks ranked in the AP poll with # of weeks ranked in the AP top 10 holding more weight.

We're equal. You have what was mentioned, we have more Top 20 finishes, Top 10 finishes, I'm pretty sure All-Americans, etc.. I'd put a little more weight on what you mentioned but then the head to head record basically evens it out.

Bench McElroy made this thread a few months ago laying out all of these factors and it was actually pretty good. Aggies will say Aggies and Hogs will say Hogs. So back to:

Most of which are a product of the conference you are in. We were in the same conference for 76 years, in that time aTm was 489-422-37 for a 51.6% win percentage, Arkansas was 518-350-31 for a 57.6% win percentage. Head to head, Arkansas held a 38-24-3 lead, winning 58.4% of the games vs. 36.9%. Arkansas won 29 more games from 1915-1991, despite playing 49 fewer games total.

So yeah, pretty equal but Arkansas was better.

That shouldn't factor into your equation at all as conference championship games are a fairly recent addition to the game - historically speaking.

you use everything! mix it and stir it like a big pot of gumbo

IMO, National Titles become more relevant as you approach today...LSU has a 1908 championship I think....meh

I would weight football after 1980 as well...modern football started to take shape.

Also, I would have catagories, not rankings...

Notre Dame, Alabama, and Oklahoma seem to be the winningest programs...

Michigan I think has the MOST wins, but they've got very few National Championships to show for it.

Most programs have hot and cold spells....Nebraska and Tennessee really fell off the wagon after the 90s...

Historical Elite:
Nebraska, Tennessee, Michigan, Alabama, Ohio State, Penn State, Oklahoma, USC, Texas, Notre Dame

probably overall wins combined with schedule strength

conference championships and national championships are significant but their value is colored by which conference you played in and the circumstances under which you were awarded the national championship.
