I'd say overall wins. The rest tend to trend towards that number.
Not necessarily though. As an example, AR has more wins than us because they've been around longer.
Edit: As another example...there are some mediocre programs that have more wins than FSU (who's only been around since 47).

Pre-BCS though, a lot of these are VERY subjective.

Not all conferences are equal though.

the only conferences that are questionable would be the big east and the ACC. the pac 8/10/12, swc, sec, big 10, and big 8/12 are all legit

What's a good way to rank cfb programs historically?

Personally, I think a combination of winning percentage, sos, and BCS titles/BCS bowl wins (since it is a system that everyone agreed to play under) is fair to everyone.

College Football didn't start in the 90's

I bet you would think that's fair, since you became a viable program shortly before the BCS came to exist.

That will always be the case. Without any kind of covariate or way to balance programs (teams/schools were very different back in the day), inequities will abound.

"I think a combination of winning percentage, sos,"
That was in my last post.

Okay, what about just winning % and sos? Those are the only things that a program can really control.
