Number of programs they have gotten in trouble by snitching

Well AL and AU would both be tied at the top probably.

That's something a program can't control though.

Here's what I came up with in that thread yesterday, using a combination of win % and sos:

Michigan 1625.70
Notre Dame (IN) 1583.51
Texas 1566.23
Alabama 1565.10
Ohio State 1521.76
Oklahoma 1520.79
Nebraska 1513.58
Georgia 1507.54
Louisiana State 1493.79
Southern California 1487.58
Auburn (AL) 1477.37
Tennessee 1469.50
Florida 1464.45
Georgia Tech 1408.86
Texas A&M 1407.44
Wisconsin 1393.68
Minnesota 1393.26
Pennsylvania State 1352.96
Arkansas 1349.87
Michigan State 1342.92
Washington 1338.90
UCLA 1303.54
Pittsburgh (PA) 1279.93
Miami (FL) 1261.53
Florida State 1228.08

2-0 against us though.

Still sounds very nice. The compass bowl was our 34th appearance.

I can get behind this list.

And UG and TN are both ahead of us, so let's see someone try and say that it "favors" UF.

Combination of:

1. Wins (favors teams that have been around longer, but that actually should be at least a small factor in my opinion)

2. Win % (might favor teams that have easier SOS, but its still an good benchmark)

3. SOS (this will counterbalance any inequity with using the win %)

4. National championships (for this, use poll era championships and BCS championships only - this goes all the way back to 1936, so it captures plenty. So - AP poll champions, Coaches/UPI poll champions, and BCS champions. Although there are some multi-champion years in this era and some disputes, most people will recognize a good bit of validity in winning these national championships. I think you really need this in addition to the other categories because it still means something to win championships and teams should be rewarded for this when ranking best programs of all time).

I think these four categories will give you a good picture although there will always be debate.

I don't like using conference championships because there is just too much disparity between conferences. I don't like using bowls, because bowls have a weird history with respect to importance teams placed on them, access to bowls, etc.

I can agree to this, but what about the lengthy period when the AP and UPI would choose their champion (s) before the bowls?

FYI a lot of people just wanna see if the list has Bama number one or not, and then decide from there if it's the best list

It's as if no matter what ranking formula we use bama's always going to be #1.

I think we can all agree that any ranking system that does not put Bama at #1 is an out right travesty.
