2011 Alabama and LSU. Take your pick. LSU shut down more high powered offenses that year (Oregon, Florida and WV). Held Alabama to 6 at Tuscaloosa.

Alabama shut out Jordan Jefferson in the championship game (not sure if that was a big accomplishment ).

There have not been any better defenses in the SEC in the last 40 years.

Best ones I can remember are

2011 Alabama *best ever*
2011 LSU
2009 Florida

The 08 Gators that won the chip had a much better offense, but the defense in 09 was even better.

12.4 ppg allowed
252 ypg allowed
153 passing ypg @ 52.5% comp

Weirdly they didn't have any shutouts but 4x only allowed 3 points.

Joe Haden, Janoris Jenkins, Major Wright, Ahmad Black starting DBs, Carlos Dunlap almost led the SEC in sacks 2 years in a row. They just suffocated opposing passing games like no one I had seen before.

2004 AU is certainly on the list. Maybe not the best, but top 10 for sure.

*Post '92 expansion.

2006 Florida. Allowed 13.5 ppg and held Ohio State's offense to 82 total yds and only one TD.

My number 1 is the Bama 92 defense. I took breaks when the offense was on the field. Defense was must watch TV.

My number 2 would have to be 2011 LSU. They won games despite having an anemic offense. Holding a good Bama offense to FGs for over 7 quarters.

came to post this.

quote:

Tennessee closed the 1938 season with five consecutive shutouts, then went the entire 10-game 1939 regular season without allowing a single point, bringing its two-year streak to 15 straight shutouts. The streak was snapped in a 14-0 bowl loss to Oklahoma to close the 1939 season, but the 15 straight shutouts remain an NCAA record that will likely never be broken. And if you venture back a few games before the start of the streak, Tennessee actually shutout 18 of 19 opponents between those two seasons.

Impossible to determine due to the metamorphosis of offenses over time.
If I HAD to pick, I'd say the 2011 Alabama Nat'l Championship team.

BAMA - 1992, 2009, 2011, 2016.

There are a bunch from older eras too.

No.

2020 Alabama doesn't belong either.

In modern era 2018 MSU defense was damn salty but since we could not score and punted a ton, to hold opponents the entire season including bowl game to 171 total points was pretty freaking good.

Which defense had a better or more talented group of linebackers and secondary?

I'd say 2016 Alabama has them beat in terms of overall talent. At LB you had Reuben Foster, Rashaan Evans, Ryan Anderson, Tim Williams, and Shaun Dion Hamilton. The secondary had guys like Marlon Humphrey, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Eddie Jackson, Levi Wallace, and Tony Brown.

Bama 92 defense
May well be relative to the era. If you will check box scores, had the updyke offense not scored a single point, they would have still won 7 games due to the defense and special teams scoring

2011 LSU averaged nearly 36 points a game. We only remember that offense as anemic because we remember them for 9-6 and 21-0.
