1959 Ole Miss 10-1 allowed 21 points on the season and 14 came from short fields after turnovers.

LSU had a team play 10 games and only allowed 11 points.
Offense gave up a safety, defense allowed one TD all season.

How many defensive guys from 9-6 went to the NFL and how many of those started at some point. Those teams were nasty. That being said...could either of those defense stop today’s offenses?

Probably not, but they could have slowed them down.

It's a shame, to me, that Alabama didn't even play any of the great offenses of that day. LSU at least played Oregon and West Virginia, I would have loved to have seen 2011 Alabama against Stanford or Oklahoma State just to see the styles.

I think 2011 LSU matched up better with passing spread type teams (as they did for most of that early spread era) because of their secondary and ball hawks.

Alabama was a typical pre-spread Alabama defense, but while they would have held their own I think there's a chance they get exposed a bit by spread it wide passing teams

No, the lineman and linebackers were too big and slow to cover the way you need them to these days.

Saban switched his defensive recruiting around 2013-14 to start accommodating for the new style of offenses. Mainly due to Manziel and Auburn.

Safety sized Linebackers. Bama had those 260lbs run stoppers

Yep, and back then it made sense because the only time you would possibly need the smaller guys was against a BXII team in a bowl game.

The closest in the SEC was probably Arkansas, and they weren't an Air Raid team.

We had the smaller guys to put in and play dime, etc when needed. Problem is you couldnt switch them out cause of the HUNH.

So youd get stuck with 250 lbs linebackers like Hightower out there covering speedy TEs and running backs one on one.

This is why I think the 2019LSU/2020Bama vs 95Neb or 01Miami for Goat are nonsense. Totally different ball games

Agreed - basically impossible to compare teams themselves to eachother.

The game has changed so drastically from 2000 to 2020.

Yep A&M in 12 was a big part of why Saban changed.

I was at the Ga. Southern game that year when a triple option team put up 21 points on Alabama. The Tide had NO clue how to defense that bunch of D-2 guys! Dre Kirkpatrick spent the afternoon on his arse being taken down by a "nobody" halfback from out of the backfield.
After the game Saban was livid!..said as long as he was at Bama, they'd NEVER schedule a triple option team again! ....don't blame him.

The streak was snapped in a 14-0 bowl loss to Oklahoma to close the 1939 season

It was actually USC who broke the streak not Oklahoma. USC won 14-0 in the Rose Bowl.

Playing a triple option team is such a different mentality.

One guy has GOT to stay with the RB no matter what in case of the pitch.

It would be like being trained all year to do something with your right hand.. then being told to do it with your left for this one game.

Couple of years later he was asked if Alabama had plans for depth being played in a tomato can game... I think Ga. Southern is what spawned the “tin horn” comments... and it was funny!!

For you young guys, and I'm not that old, the triple option is great fun to watch.

UNA won three straight Divison II titles running it in the early 90's.

It is incredibly hard to defend if you have a decent running QB with balls of steel that will hang on to ball, make a perfect pitch, and then get the shite knocked out of him.
