2011 LSU had some wacky games.

Gave up 460 yards passing to WVU but won by 4 TDs

Were getting smoked by Arky til TM7 took over

Had more points than passing yards in the SEC championship

Les almost pulled it off somehow

Go back and watch Hightower covering the middle of the field in 2011. It appeared he did it better than Ragland did in 2015.

Hightower has proven he can succeed in both the ground and pound era and the spread 'em out, HUNH era. He's arguably the best linebacker of the Saban era thus far.

I think this is true in the aggregate, but I think 2011 is an exception. We’ll never know for sure, but that defense was just so disciplined and good at the fundamentals (e.g., tackling). Haven’t seen a defense like that sense. 2016 was great too. Regarding the 2011 team, wherever the ball was would be met with a swarm of tacklers. And they had a knack for knocking the shite out of opposing offensive players.

I mentioned earlier that in 13 games (including bowl game) we only gave up a total of 171 points and that was a Joe Moorhead team that punted a ton and the defense was on the field a lot. That bunch was nasty good but some clowns on this board will overlook all that.

2011 Alabama
2011 LSU
2016 Alabama

Those are the best in recent memory.

I would add 2015. Incredible depth and great against the run. And probably the deepest front seven in history.

I think 2011 LSU matched up better with passing spread type teams (as they did for most of that early spread era) because of their secondary and ball hawks.

LSU also had smaller, faster players at LB, coupled with Mathieu who could line up at any position outside the front 4 on any given play. They also had guys like Mingo who were running 4.4 40s playing DE. Alabama, back then, had bigger guys in front 7 that ate up space but would probably struggle keeping up with the speed of today's offenses in comparison to LSU that year. We were all about speed. I remember seeing a graphic on sports science about the speed of our secondary and how much ground they could cover on any given play. How that defense was built was how they were seemingly the only teams to contain teams like A&M and Oregon. They also bottled up Lamar Jackson several years later

I remember the 2018 MSU defense. A very good unit.

This is true, and the reason y'all handled A&M better than we did in 2012.

But it's also a big reason we won the champioship against yall in 2011. That and QB play.

Like I said earlier, I'd take the 92 defense as best Bama D of all time.

The stats on sacks, tfls,, turnovers, and defensive scoring was sick.

Plus that D didnt have a offense anywhere near comparable to Bama's 2011 to help them out much.

I think the 2011 defense could have figured out 2012 A&M. The Bama defenses had to evolve but as I said I believe 2011 was an exception. Super competitive, fierce and off-the-charts good at fundamentals.

2012 didn’t have Dre Kirkpatrick, Hightower, Upshaw, etc. Furthermore I would have trusted that defense way more since Hightower was out there leading the way.

Look at AU 1913 or 1914

In 1913, gave up 8 points
In 1914, gave up zero points
