How.is campus? Is power out there as well. I saw Union was setup as a warming station.

Most dorms are back with power as if this morning

Most sorority and fraternity houses still do not have power

The center of town is an apocalypse. All those old trees have either have their tops broken out or limbs broken off. Anything within a few blocks of the Square and those old neighborhoods around the Square wont have power for a while.

The relatively new neighborhoods like the Commons and the area by the Ammo plant have power back. Anything developed within the last 25 years has underground power so it's just an issue of getting the transmission lines back up.

The county is absolutely fricked. Rural areas of north Mississippi will be out of power for weeks.

Rural NEMS is in dire straits. Hopefully once the temperatures rise and things start to melt some they can get out to the boondocks

I’ve gone down to my parents place in Jackson, whether it was wise or not to be on the roads. Feels much better with power and heat. I don’t expect to have power at my house for a week if not 2 with how things are progressing. Hopefully everything gets cleared up.

Did you cut off the main water line to the house before you left? Last thing you want to come home to is a burst pipe.

If you didn’t I would see if you have a neighbor or friend that could do it for you

It’s exactly what you think the biggest ice storm would do to 300 year old massive trees

That's a shame. Oxford has a lot of beautiful old trees.

I was getting a lot of updates from my mom's assisted living facility in Oxford during the storm. They lost power a couple of times and had to have staff stay in nearby hotels.

I drove by the grove yesterday.
It’s mostly still in tact. Lots of tree limbs down but didn’t see any trees uprooted or completely destroyed. The oak trees did well in the storm. The pine trees not so much. Not sure how this storm impacts the root systems though.

I’d say the grove won’t look noticeably different. And an opportunity to plant more trees.

Told the girlfriend Friday night while I was washing out old Home Depot buckets and figuring out how to seal them to keep the water clean that I have made to executive decision to just get her pets and get the hell out of there.

Cut off the water lines to our homes, cracked some sinks open just in case for residual water, and we're both hoping that was enough. I have gas at the house, but only in one room and for the kitchen. I was also worried about water (wisely enough).

The hell of it is, we were originally going to go to the old home of my grandparents near Utica that my Dad has been using as a second house since th grandparents passed, but at the last minute, he said he wanted to use that one for him and his gf and redirected us to Brandon.

They lost power out there, and he found out after it was too late that the gas man had not come by to fill the propane tank at the house like he said. Brandon ended up being fine, but they had a rough 24 hours.

He was able to get gas pretty easily Monday, and they've been going up to Vicksburg a little to keep from going stir crazy while waiting for Entergy to get their lines back up.

Meanwhile, from the looks of the pictures coming out of Oxford, I guess we live here now. She has no trees near her house, so she is probably OK. On the other hand, I backup to a lot of loblollies just over the property line in the national forest. I don't think any limbs would hit the house, but if any of those trees came down, all bets are off.

Fingers crossed.

I'm guessing a neighbor would have called by now if a tree was in my house. I'm definitely the eccentric, professor type, but I also grew up down here. I talk to my neighbors a bit.

Only other thing would be the hot water heater freezing, but at least I shut the water off on the way out.

Poor folks up there - I told a couple of other faculty I'm friendly with that they were nuts to ride it out, and they kinda laughed me off like it would be a big adventure. I'm usually like that myself, but for some reason, I wasn't this time.

I do wish I was up there to help with the clean up, but I don't have anywhere to be myself and figure I'd just be more deadweight on the system at the moment.

Hope any of y'all here who or in Oxford or have family/friends there are all doing OK.

Grove took a big beating.

Water is being suspended in areas to be able to find the leaks.

School suspended until 2/8 .. well OM is.

Many students going home which will help reduce people out and about and work can get done.

Some professors are emailing their students about assignments .. basically saying if you chose to leave to go to an affected area and can’t get back oh well. Idk what class or prof but parents are livid.

Also 8 frat houses have water and o e had a fire from what I gather.

It’s a shite show for sure.

We left Oxford and went to my inlaws in Tupelo today. No power, no water, no Internet, and shitty cell service just wasn't cutting it. CR 217 from 30 to 6 was sketchy, but 6 was fine. I was hearing it'll be another week before we got power or water. Looking at all the damage, I could believe it. Shut off my water main before I left since the bitch mayor decided to cut off county water (even though I also pay city taxes).

Tater Tot really flubbed up the response to this. Having the entire northern 3rd of the state without any Interstate access has caused further impact. They should have been out there plowing the ice off the Interstate as a priority but instead allowed it to continue to just get worse over time.

He really should have activated the National Guard and State Guard to help with cleanup just to get roads passable. It's not just Oxford. Alcorn County was also hit really hard and those folks have been without power and water too.

This shite is BAD.
