Gus's Good Times Deli is the game day spot in Knoxville...and has been for decades.

It is less than 1/2 mile from Neyland Stadium. Anyone who spends any time in Knoxville knows that the steamer is the key to the awesome sub sandwich.

The only one of those places I've been to is Dixie Chicken and I didn't eat anything.

Had the greatest burger in the history of the world at Dotty Dumplings in Madison, WI. Something with some garlic sauce concoction.

Campus is badass for the three or four months it is inhabitable.

I know they had a hijab in their "swimsuit issue" recently. Have they had a tranny yet?

The list is too low brow, featuring greasy burger joints over well prepared food and drinks.

For me, the Snack Bar is Oxford is the best Eats and Drinks in a college town. Nothing better than sitting on the table in the back, talking with friendly fans, and enjoying great food and drinks.

Their bartenders are nationally recognized. The Pre Prohibition Old Fashioned is one of the best drinks you can buy.

There isn't a thing wrong with a double butterburger.

McDonald's and Burger King don't smash their burgers. Wendy's is supposed to do a 4 corner press (still not a smash, and the griddle is not hot enough for a good sear) but 16 year olds are generally pretty lazy. It's safe to say that you have never had an actual smashed and seared burger at any one of these places.

It’s nice to see a man of culture amongst the sea of “that ain’t southern” folk that inhabit this board.

frick no, it ain’t southern, it’s the grand champion of burger preparation techniques

Pastrami and Hot pepper cheese for the win. Brown bread, mayo and mustard. And thats it.

Is this the same writer that went to Missouri for her "journalism" degree?

As far as burgers go The Hound in Auburn cures their own bacon in house and makes 50/50 burgers with ground sirloin served with shoestring fries. They do bison burgers as well.

I'm running a project in Opelika right now. Might need to make a run to Auburn to try this out. Thanks for the heads up!

#1 of course resides in CoMo

So...Joan Niesen thinks that the #1 greatest college town eats is in Columbia, Missouri...and also...Columbia is the 5th greatest College Football Town - College Football's Top 10 Towns

She grew up in St. Louis and recently graduated with a M.S. in Journalism from Missouri. Coincidence...I think not.

Zingerman's as a deli is awesome, but the actual food it puts out is so-so.
