I’m looking for our first dog, a golden retriever, how do y’all go about finding puppies for sale from a good breeder if you don’t know anybody personally? Newspaper? Online? Craigslist? Is there a website or something? I grew up with my dad being very picky on our dogs aka the genetics of who their parents were etc. I’m not just gonna buy some scrub pup from anybody I want a good genetically proven dog. How do y’all find a pup if you don’t know anybody locally that’s breeding?

Look into the rescue leagues. Probably plenty of goldens, but might not be a lot of puppies.
One good thing about rescue leagues is that they require you you return the dog if it doesn't work out for you. I never realized the importance of this, until I adopted a rescue that was a pure damn psychopath. Irish setter that attacked my other dog daily. Return to sender, no questions asked.
Every dog my family has had since then has been a pound dog.

Would not go pound dog if you want a Golden.
You are pretty much guaranteed to get one with hip dysplasia. Be ready to shell out some dough.

It may be helpful to post this on the Outdoor Board. A lot of dog knowledge over there.

If you are looking for a Golden and are near Baldwin County AL I can help. We've had them for the past 25 years. Our current female (8yro) is one our best, she wasn't some high cost bloodline type (we've had those... a white golden.. he was not very bright, nice and all but kinda a dud personality wise).. but she is awesome. I can find her paperwork and get you the breeder info...

I'm not about to tell you what to do, but all of our dogs have been castoffs/rescues and they've all been good dogs, especially this guy:
He appears to be mostly golden but not 100%. Somebody dumped him a couple of years ago out in the country where I went for bike rides. It took a while to get him to trust me but ever since then, we're best buddies.

So you want a dog that will maybe last 7-8 years?
Get a mutt and be happy for the next 15 years.

I got one about 20 years ago from these people (I think it was these people, I know it was in Winfield).
One of the best dogs I ever owned. Smart and great around my children. He died at the age of 14.

Have your wife go on facebook. Most people I see let their dogs run off and bang everything, and then are shocked when they have pups.
I got a beautiful black lab off the back of someones truck. Brings me a squirrel or a bird every damn morning

I just picked up another rescue and have been doing so since the 1970's. I have had purebreds including the littermate of a very famous dog but hard to beat the love from the ones I have rescued. Unless you are going on the show circuit, pure breed is not really a big deal.
Any reason you decided on a golden?
What is your household like and is a golden good in that environment? Generally when I have had a big dog I had the acreage to let them have a good run or had access to land where they could run daily.
If you are not going to be around all day as you have to work it might be good to look at getting a pair so they are not bored when you are gone for long hours. Dogs are pack animals and have separation anxiety when the alpha (generally you are the feeder) are not there.

Next door neighbor has a couple of cats but I think the grey one is free to a good home.

My roommate had a dog when I got a puppy (purebred off craigslist - has been great). I agree having another dog around made everything exponentially easier.

If he's been missing, I wait a few days and follow the smell.

Every time I look at that expression I get a laugh.

A lot of local area shelters have weekly adoption events, typically at local petsmart and petco stores.

I usually whistle and holler, "come here, boy!"
