Things may have been a lot different today if we had wiped the islamic regime off the map then. They were MUCH weaker then... no nuclear stuff, their military was far weaker than what they have today.

I think the main reason we attacked them was that they refused to stop enrichment and working towards a nuclear weapon (maybe weeks away, maybe years away) but when they had one the would have used it on Israel. Israel would have retaliated and probably also struck all the other muslim countries. If Israel was going to be wiped off the map they were going to take all them with them.

Iran was also quickly building a massive stockpile of intermediate and ballistic missiles. And hundreds of drones. They were manufacturing them quickly and if we had waited months or years it would have been far more difficult to remove them from power.

I doubt we go to Kharg. I think the talk about Kharg is to conceal where we will actually go. Probably somewhere on the coast, or and island at the choke point in the Straight. Somewhere that will help eliminate the IRGC from attacking oil tankers.

Or we aren't really negotiating with any Iranians. We said that to make the Iranians all think we are secretly talking to someone else in the regime. Since so many of its leadership is dead, and their replacements are dead, I am sure there is a lot of uncertainty in the regime.

Or instead of Kharg they could use marines to take the islands in the narrowest part of the straight. There is an airfield on the largest island which would be useful to us but the Iranians would probably destroy it before they lost it.

Taking those islands would make it easier to control the straight (at least to my civilian eyes).
