NASA hears from Voyager 1, the most distant spacecraft from Earth, after months of quiet

It was probably looking for intelligent life, but it gave up and reported back to Earth.

The fact that we’re still in contact with a satellite we launched into space in the 1970s is pretty fricking cool.

actually a pretty cool story for my nerds out there. they never really lost contact with it.
one of the chips finally failed (remember it was made in the 70s). the chip was responsible for packaging up the health and science data. they remotely updated the firmware with the code from the failed chip, but since they're so limited in memory they had to spread it over a bunch of other chips.
so they inserted jmp instructions for a custom dynamic linking scheme, on the fly, from like 20 light-hours away, across other running chips..and pulled it off without segfaulting the damn thing

Yet my RC car growing up couldn’t go more than 25 ft away from me and I’d lose the signal
