bottom line, you mold the defense around the players. you don't try to make the players fit into the defense. We honestly could be halfway decent on that side of the ball with a capable coordinator.
You…..you realize that’s exactly Henry’s point right?

If we are going to run a 3-2-6 defense and have any kind of success in the SEC then we have to have some block eaters, some 2 gap DL types. Particularly at the nose. We currently have zero. We have some guys giving it their all but we just aren't equipped to run this defense effectively. Think Jerrell Powe, Norman Hand, Benito Jones, Peria Jerry. You have to have someone like that in the middle of this defense

Correct and we are only running this because of not having enough LBs or Dline that are worth a damn.

How are our JUCO transfers doing up front? And when is Springer coming back?

yep and my point is that you can't have sam williams and cedric johnson lining up over guards with both their hands down. doesn't work. who cares if we have shitty tackles, at least have a couple out there to eat up some blocks. his scheme simply does not work with our talent.
maybe it changes when that dude from germantown gets here cause he is absolutely massive. but as of right now we will continue to give up three hunny a game on the ground

no...
You're not understanding what we're saying.....When we say we don't have the people to play a 4-3 defense we aren't just talking about players talented enough to start.
We're quite literally talking about the amount of people who are on the team.....as in....they aren't there.

Matt Luke's classes were 31st (3 DL), 32nd (5 DL), 22nd (4 DL). Lane's first class was 34th (3 DL). Seems like we should have enough bodies but we can't expect to succeed in the SEC with classes in the thirties. Last year's class was 17th (6 DL) and we have Zxavian Harris committed for this year so we are on the right track.

Well we need to find out where they are because they all sure as shite aren't all on the depth chart.

We have 19 defensive lineman on our roster. They must be be pretty poor considering what we put on the field.

Just noticing your signature rebelrouser. Not to derail (but to derail), where do I need to go eat in Columbia? Ive been living in Augusta for a couple years and tried out Halls and Black Rooster so far

Not rebelrouser but lived there for a handful of years.
Motor City Supply Co. is fantastic.
And DiPrato's is arguably the best brunch place I've ever been to. I prefer it over BBB

Makes you wonder at what point do you just put someone out there to fill in a gap or occupy an offensive lineman so he's not doubleteaming someone else? Maybe, just maybe, that could lead to less time in the pocket for the opposing qb.

I have patio furniture that can muster more resistance

Just because they have DL next to their name doesn't mean they can line up and win on the line of scrimmage, especially in the division we play in. I don't remember seeing any that had the size + strength/power that made you think they could play. They'd be big but fat and not muscular, or small/fast but not enough mass.

3-2-6 doesn't work in the SEC.

Have you read any of the posts in this thread? We don't have an option but to play a 3-2-6. You have more fingers on one hand than "front seven" players worth a shite on the roster right now.
3-2-6 does work against some teams. It will not work against a team with a great run game. The run game will be a problem because our soft arse defense shies away from contact outside of Campbell.

This. And it's not exactly easy to go from a 3-2-6 to a 4-3 defense one week to the next.
and if you're just wanting to add a DL just to eat up a block then you have to take a player from somewhere else. A safety can eat up a block just as much as a crappy DL that isn't good enough to get double-teamed.
What you should be asking for is more blitzing if you just want to eat up a blocker.

IIR the 3-2-6 was installed this year because of the roster gaps, not because it is Durkin's preference. Overlooked here is that the D did quite well 1st half holding AR to 14. The shite hit the fan in the second which might be attributed to lack of quality depth. Notice the same thing happened to AR's D which runs a very similar but more talented D to ours.
I agree that the 3-2-6 is just not the best option against a quality running team. For you guys wanting to just add another body peruse the depth chart and tell me who would you add? Also, when an offense or defense is installed it's not easy to make major changes say from 3-2 to 4-3 on the fly.

I think what frustrates me more than anything about our defense is our lack of either ability or willingness to be multiple in our looks. What I'm trying to say is that in some situations we obviously need more men in the box but we never get out of the 3 man front look. Can we not adjust in game and give the opposing offense a different look?

I get that it's not easy to switch in the middle of a season. I don't think that is a viable option. At this point I'm guessing we are just going to let Durkin ride it out and evaluate at the end of the season. And yes, I know that we don't have a lot of talent.
However, as someone previously mentioned, my frustration lies in the fact that we line up in basically the same look almost every play and repeatedly take it in the mouth. We rarely blitz. We have three undersized lineman taking on the entire O line basically every play, which in turn leads to getting our backers blocked. I would like to see us be more aggressive because at this point we have nothing to lose. I'd rather see us die climbing than just sitting back, playing vanilla defense and hoping Chance can get a strip. Like Kiffin said we already know the other team will score most likely. Why not put some pressure on them and force them into a mistake?
We don't have to change our defense. My previous posts were more a product of my frustration after Saturday. I think it would be dumb to fire durkin in the middle of the season. But I would like to see us at least try to be more aggressive. Have keys on the field and walk him down to the line more often. He knocked the ever living shite out of Alabamas starting guard a few weeks ago. Send some of our DBs on slot blitzes. I don't have a perfect answer but at this point we know at least something has to change.
Bottom line it is immensely frustrating that we are almost wasting the insane talent we have on offense with a shitty defense. We won't have another corral for a long time. If we had lost the game Saturday, would of us feel different? Because we almost did.
