I don’t really know what we need to do. Alls I know is we won. For now, that’s good enough. I’ll worry about the finer points next week.

We need to recruit. It’s not totally scheme its talent. We are running a 3-2-6 because of lack of D line and LBers. The three listed I really don’t know how they are. They were highly recruited but does that mean they are actually talented at this level?

I think it’s a combination of both talent and scheme. Talent wise, defense is maybe average in fbs, which is not good enough to compare for a conference title or the playoffs. But the scheme is awful. leaving guys wide open, letting arkansas drive all the way down the field in a minute, not being able to stop the run, the whole thing is just terrible.
And that’s not even mentioning the failed tackles. How many times did arkansas break multiple tackles on one play today? You simply can’t expect your offense to bail your defense out every game. Something has to change.

the fact that we are consistently running 3 lineman against SEC teams says it all. his defense simply doesn't work. his scheme is dogshit. and as far as tackling goes? see ya.

If lane doesn't can his arse i'd be surprised. hopefully he lets em hang and gives durkin the boot. with the freshman we have and the incoming class of recruits next year, our defense should be immensely better than it is. but its not

frick durkin

We have no defensive linemen. We could have the best backers in the world but if the qb has an hour to find an opening he's going to. I think we are much improve from last year but ultimately still don't have horses worth a shite up front.

This ^

We had the worst defense in the FBS. This will take more than 2 years but we are not getting enough DL recruits.

Guys. this is firmly a trend we are in defensively and recruiting doesn’t seem to be directing it in the right direction. It’s a problem no doubt.

The 3-2-6 is useless if teams are getting 7 yards a carry against it and you have zero pass rush. We might as well gamble on defense with blitzing on first down and hope to make big play. We can’t keep playing 5 man fronts and not stopping the run or pass.

Yeah it’s the ultimate “bend don’t break” strategy IMO.

We just beat the #13 team in the nation. Maybe take at least a day to enjoy it before you start bitching. Geez.

Offense is great. Defense is terrifying.

I gotta say Texas A&M has had an amazing game plan against Bama. They’re blitzing every play and have been the aggressor in this game. We need to start playing the same way.

"We just beat the #13 team in the nation. Maybe take at least a day to enjoy it before you start bitching. Geez."

I REALLY understand and appreciate this POV. I really do. I don't mean to pee on the parade. BUT...Rebel fans seem to celebrate ANY victory, no matter what it took and how small the margin. And that's why mediocrity is hired and allowed to stay. Ole Miss hired Lane Kiffin as a gesture to winning championships. Yet they tolerate a defensive coaching crew that is literally a national embarrassment. I'll keep saying it: DJ Durkin "coached" a defense to 124 out of 125 FBS teams. Georgia Southern held AR to fewer points than OM. Last week AR didn't score ONE point. Ole Miss allowed Arkansas to score MORE points than the best team in the land, Alabama - AT HOME. Matt Corral played his heart out and had to risk life and limb to eek out a meager victory. Keep in mind, AR missed a short field goal and fumbled deep in OM territory. Ole Miss did NOT "win" this game. Arkansas came to VH stadium, put a whooping on the OM defense, and then LOST the game. The OM defense is not worthy to be in the SEC. And I refuse to believe it's because OM has the crappiest talent in the SEC. That's a JOKE. If OM fans don't demand change, there will be none. At some point the DC can't blame "talent" on pathetic performances, yet that's what our esteemed Mr. Durkin implies. He was a LOSER at every school he's ever coached. His players DESPISED him. He left Maryland under all kind of controversy, yet someone in Oxford was convinced he was "the guy." Let's stop trying to put lipstick on a pig. You want a REAL national program or a middle of the pack pretender? Personally, I'm not celebrating ANYTHING tonight other than Lane's comments at the end of the game that indicate he's had enough of Durkin's crap.

They have the defensive line and linebackers to do that

man i get it you want to defend durkin. but at the end of the day it doesnt fricking matter. we have talent on defense. all offseason we were thinking the defense would be improved with better tackling, coverage etc. But the product we put on the field is horse shite.

If he's not gone at the end of the year, I'll lose faith in the program. We have enough money to hire a good coordinator. maybe not a top name, but at least a young up and comer like lebby for a few years.

regardless im sick and tired of us having a soft arse defense. we have good players. cambpell, robinson and lakia are good backers. sam williams and cedric johnson are extremely talented. but you think putting the former as a 6-7 tech against SEC O lines is a good idea? hell no. his defense does not fit our talent.

bottom line, you mold the defense around the players. you don't try to make the players fit into the defense. We honestly could be halfway decent on that side of the ball with a capable coordinator.
