And I don't believe for a second that any player they wanted would just come bc it's Boise. That school isn't the ALabama of the West.
Harsin seems very pragmatic. In other words, he knows no matter where he has coached he and his coaches have to work hard to ensure they have any shot at recruits.

Both? Why do we have to choose between two things that aren’t exclusive of eachother?
Let’s look at a few of the most recent commits
Micah Riley-Ducker - one of the first TEs offered by this staff. He visited on his own dime in February (when he couldn’t talk to coaches or interact with the university). He followed it up with an official in June before committing.
Damari Alston - New Staff offered back in January. Pursued him lightly until the last month when they went all-in and landed his commitment. He wasn’t their #1 guy but he was one of 3 guys they initially pushed for and got him.
Jay Fair - Offered by the new staff in January. Pursued him as one of their top WR targets and landed his commitment.
They went all in on Geriner and got a quick commitment in February. They wanted Powell Gordon and he committed back in February when there was seemingly no need for Auburn to push for a commitment. Caleb Wooden is hard to put in a bucket because his brother plays at Auburn.
These are all guys that, from our vantage point, the staff really wanted. Damari is really the first guy that’s in board, with maybe Wooden as an exception, that wasn’t pursued as a top option from the very start and we know that because KN said a few times that he’d be a take for Auburn if they really pushed for him.
I’m really hesitant to keep repeating myself here. I think I’ve said about all I can say on this topic. At some point everyone just has to come to their own conclusion. Im waiting to see how the 2023 class turns out before making assumptions on Harsin’s recruiting ability.
Norvell at FSU had a dogshit season last year, a worse class than Auburn in the last cycle, yet looks like they’re building relationships now and closing on recruits. People expect Bobo and Mason to do some heavy lifting on the regional relationships and that’s fair to expect but Auburn’s targets are set a bit higher than the guys Mason was recruiting at Vandy and Bobo was recruiting at USCe for one season and Colorado State before that

Is it though? I mean he has been recruiting Darius Clemons for a long time and that’s a dude that was likely never going to go to Boise, but he was still going after him.
No one outside of the people involved in recruiting seem to have a real grasp on how the staff is going about recruiting. The recruiting beat writers seem a little frustrated at times with how little they being told.

The most famous of example of why I think that’s completely wrong is Zach Wilson. He committed to Harsin and Boise in the summer. He takes a late OV to BYU in mid December and then commits/signs his LOI 5 days later and is on campus at BYU a few days after that.
Not exactly an example of Harsin picking who he wants and getting them.
Most of the Boise state recruiting classes were California and Texas kids that they had to fight like hell to hang onto through signing day

Exactly. No matter how many games they won at Boise State, convincing even a 3-star kid from California or some other state like that to come to Idaho to play in a non-P5 conference isn't "easy". Those kids have other options that are closer to home - like Zach Wilson who is a Mormon and therefore a no-brainer to pick BYU after they offered.
That is also why he fought so hard with the admin at Boise to try to move up in level, and hence why he ultimately took the Auburn job.

Excellent post.
I have a hunch Harsin will end up being a really good hire and that this season is going to really excite the Auburn family. Cant quite put my finger on why, but im feeling optimistic

I mean, I know who he is Just saying that the sites haven’t talked about him much. KN says as of June, Hurst wasn’t hearing much from Auburn.

Auburn is still pushing for ‘22 5* OT Josh Conerly Jr. He was one of Harsin’s first offers at Auburn. He said he’s really impressed that Harsin was recruiting him for a long time at Boise and now at Auburn. He has all 5 OVs left and mentioned AU as one of the 5 places he’d like to use an OV for.

KN caught up with Troy Ford after BCW. Sounds like Auburn made a huge impression, especially with his mom. He said Auburn will be one of his top schools. He also referred to Ford as a LB.
Obviously, I don’t know where this kid is going to end up. He hasn’t even began his Junior season. But this is an example of the relationship building events that the staff just hasn’t had an opportunity to achieve with the current cycle kids.

KN is hearing that Auburn will bring in half of this OL class from transfers or JUCO due to the high turnover expected after this season.
Seems like a forced situation because of the current roster construction. They’ll lose at least 6:
Brahms, Manning, Hamm, Troxell, Council, and Jackson. Unsure on Coffey’s eligibility
Leaving (in 2022)
T Killian Zierer SR
G/T Kameron Stutts SR
G Jalil Irvin SR (probable Center)
G Keiondre Jones JR
G Tate Johnson JR
G Avery Jernigan (rSO)
G/T Brady Ward (SO)

That’s a problematic depth chart on every level. But next season the Tackle position is especially dire looking.
Zierer only has a couple of years of football experience at JUCO and had a major knee injury last season.
Stutts is a career reserve lineman that is best suited for interior work.
Brady Ward is a massive OL, but also a massive question mark. Some think he’s an interior guy due to athleticism.
They’re going to need help beyond what high school can provide
