The regular season matters, but what people are leaving out is that the last 5 regular seasons matter for this season. That's the problem.
If Bama came into this year having finished 3-9 the last 5 years, they wouldn't be a lock to the CFP if they lost to Florida.

Let the Big XII die. Let OU and Texas and whatever teams are worth a crap find a new home. 4 conference championships become the new quarterfinals. Best possible system.

8 team playoff.
Power 5 conference champions gets automatic invite.
Playoff committee chooses top Group of 5 team.
Playoff committee chooses 2 at large teams.

Because not all conferences are created equal. It's not that hard.

There was very little controversy with the adjustments to the BCS except between #2 and 3, and sometimes 4. No one was clamoring for 5 or higher
They should have retained the model and expanded to 4 teams.
The more it expands the more meaningless the regular season becomes, and nothing will change except transferring the selection drama from 4-6 to 8-12 where "at large" selections get even dicier.
If it does expand, either cancel CCGs or do away with Divisions and go to pods with top 2 teams playing in the CCG to keep the season more relevant.

16 is too many
4 is not enough
6 with #1 & #2 getting byes is good
8 is good also
I prefer 8.

I'll take keeping the regular season highly meaningful every year over making it so stupidly big the entire regular season is nothing but a seeding contest.
Try and get a ticket to any Duke vs North Carolina basketball game. Then let me know if the games are meaningless. Every other sport has a playoff and every other organization that plays football has a playoff other then college football bowl division.
The people who argue that it will make the regular season irrelevant are basically English Premier League Soccer fans. Congrat's
It is going to an expanded playoff because otherwise the sport will die due to players opting out. Players are losing interest and so will the fans. They don't care about tradition or rivalries. Many of them go to summer camps together and are friends.

I’m actually fine with 4. It’s about finding the best team and I can’t think of a year where I thought there were 5 potential number 1 teams. Does anyone truly think UGA and their abysmal offense deserved a shot in 2019, they were number 5.

Yes consideering your offense isn't abysmal anymore. That is exactly why there should be a larger playoff, what if a team's star player is out foor a few games with a injury?

There is never a year where there are 16 teams worthy of being in the playoff.

16 teams is overkill, IMO. I’m down with 8.
I've been good with 8 forever, but not anymore. Just apply that to this year and tell me if it would work.
It wouldn't.
There is literally no good reason to make anyone have to sit through an Alabama-Iowa or Clemson-Northwestern 35 point blowout in the first round. Zero. None whatsoever.

Please explain why the Pac-12 should get an automiatic bid. At the top, and from top to bottom, they aren't better than the American.

I was talking about 2019 with Fromm and Coley. Pretty sure UGA has lost to the only 2 ranked teams they’ve played. I agree UGA is a different team with JTD, but the UF and bama games still happened. Imo a playoff trip should be earned.

Injuries are part of the game. It’s also odd seeing a UF talk about injuries after saying injuries had zero impact on the UGA UF game.

It's not about whether or not I think they had a chance. People's opinions should be irrelevant because the competitors should have a chance to earn that Chip.
That's the thing. Champions should be decided on the field every single time in every sport. My favorite sports season ever was the worst to first 91 Braves, and that scenario in CFB is just impossible.
If USC can win every time they step on the field but be voted out of a chance to earn a championship, the system should be changed. I think they'd get smashed, but why should the opinion of someone who isn't playing matter?
Let it be decided on the field.

you can go freaking 9-3 and still make the playoffs.

Right. Expanding the playoffs lessens the importance of regular season games. The regular season should matter. I agree some changes should be made. We’ve had multiple teams be placed in the playoffs despite playing weak schedules or not winning their conference. Would be nice if the committee required a certain number of ranked wins.

Division winners from ACC, b10 , pac and SEC plus top two big12 teams = 10
So, in 2019, 8-4 Virginia, 10-3 Wisconsin, and 11-2 Utah go to your playoffs.
Why do you want to take the two best teams from the Big 12, but not the other conferences?
Seriously...some of you people just pull shite out of your arse, throw it against the wall and see if it sticks.

In a 24 team format the top 8 teams would get bye, but also since you don't seem to understand, no one is forced to watch the games. In the basketball tournament everyone always said a 16 seed will never beat a 1 seed, but then it happened.
