Is NCAA Football in a decline? What would correct it?

I believe it is. When you look at the sport as a whole, it 100% with out a doubt is in a decline.
We in the SEC like to declare we don't give a frick about other conferences, but we need them to be productive. It's a sport and we need competition from around the USA. We need the smaller location to be that "dark horse"... the under dog.
We are not a competitive sport anymore. We know who is going to compete every year for the championship. There may be a few that changes on a down year. Even in the SEC, we know. Come on...
The issue isn't just coaching. There is a talent level gap and it's massive. We have to find out a way to correct it or crowds will drop off.
I think the only way is to limit the roster and recruiting class size. I think 60-65 man roster is enough, and 13-15 per class. I am for limiting the number of 5 stars a class can have as well as 4 stars a class can have.
What's your idea?

Not having Clemson vs bama every year would go a long way.

It is declining in some aspects.
Younger generations are more into other things.
College Football has never been democratic but it gets more top heavy every year. You have individual upsets ocasionally but the race for the NC is actually pretty boring for 95% of America.

It's too late. You can't take the targeting rule away now.

The cheating refs are hurting the game for sure

The bigger well established blue bloods can reload almost immediately. So many players leaving early it is the easier path for 4 & 5 star players to go, play early, and then declare early.
This is the biggest change in college football and basketball in my opinion. A second tier school can have a good year or two but they are probably going to lose key players and they won’t take a snap as a junior. That school probably doesn’t have a 4 or 5 star ready to fill in.
Players being able to leave early has swung things in favor of big well established programs.

For us it is. But look at the numbers. College football is at a 24 year LOW. That's not this year. That's 2019.

FBS attendance dips for sixth straight year to lowest since 1996
That's also the fourth-lowest average nationally since 1982. (The total includes home, neutral site and bowl games.)
Now let's not just say this is not due to the SEC... because the SEC it at it's lowest levels since 2000.

It's not just attendance either.

And how is that going to change the talent gap?

I mean football is certainly in decline. Not sure that's a college issue.
Attendance is in decline, that's because people would much rather watch stuff at home.
As your stats noted, football in general is in decline. And it will continue to be in all likelihood.

Imagine how exciting the West would be this year without Alabama. OU and OSU aren't helping either. The SEC is pretty boring. Alabama mostly likely winning the West any given year with LSU and Auburn with a 20% chance. Everyone else is out from the get-go.

Would you consider the 2020 Big XII "exciting"?
The SEC West minus Alabama this season would basically be the SEC West from 1996-2000.

That most certainly an issue. One that could be fixed by several things.
- Lower ticket prices.
- Lower concession prices.
- make the game an unknown outcome. That means make the game more competitive.
I believe this to be the starting point.
Remember the 2013 to 2014 years? PEAK. You could see it here. This place is nothing like it was then.

Attendance is down 80% around the country. The crowds are terrible. You maybe in to something.

It's like they don't even WANT people to show up!

Someone beat them both last year.

Yeah, I'm a Bama fan and it's just boring to me. I don't even keep up with recruiting because I know where we are going to be. I look forward to maybe 3 games at this point. LSU, AU, and UGA.

What he said.... Why are the stands so empty? Is it the refs?..
