Great idea. That frees up 20-25 men's scholarships under Title IX so we can add ice hockey.

This is no decline. 45-50 years ago it was Alabama, USC, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, and not much else.

Even in the SEC, we know.

No. Now in the seventies we knew. From 1971-79 we won the SEC 8 out of 9 years while hardly breaking a sweat. We lost only 3 conference games in 9 years. Only 4 wins in nine years...two over Tennessee and two over LSU...were by less than 10 points.

Georgia had one year in the seventies where everything came together for them. We were on decade long winning streaks against LSU and Tennessee. Florida was dog shite. Auburn was good early in the decade.

The SEC is far and away more competitive now.

Damn you are dumb. Your link is basically showing the opposite, that rules get made against Saban rather than in favor.

Dumbass.

Also coming from a fan of a team who only has success due to the refs constantly given them games. frick Auburn.

I would bring back the 11 game regular season, get rid of conference championship games, and go to an 8 game conference schedule.

The same way they did when we had 100 on the side line and people complained.

Division II schools manage with 36 full scholarships.

FCS manages with 63 full scholarships.

History... 1973, the NCAA stopped the hoarding of players by placing a 105 limit on colleges. In 1978, reduced to 95 and in 1992 reduced to 85.

Yeah, There should be no problem with this. Again, Division II is limited to friggin 36! FCS 63... NFL..53.

There is no logical reason that FBS can not reduce from 85 to NFL levels.

It would create better competition that would trickle down to FCS

I actually think the 4 team playoff hurt it a little bit
They desperately need to go to 8 teams
I think it's a little bit of an anomaly with how good Clemson, Bama, Ohio St and Oklahoma have been.
It won't last forever.

SEC needs Saban to retire
ACC needs some teams to push Clemson and I do think the ACC teams are adding more talent
Big 10 needs Harbaugh to be more competitive with Ohio St

The biggest difference is the money being funneled into the ACC, SEC and Big 10 from their networks. It's making it a larger gulf where teams can't compete. The top tier is only getting more money and more facilities. Wait until they start paying them for image and likeness, that rift is going to be even bigger.

Football in general is probably in decline, mostly because we've lived through the "peak football" era. The conditions to prop up football as this level just aren't sustainable. It won't go away, but it'll never be as big as it has been in the past two decades or so.

Youth participation in football has been declining nationally for years. Some of that is attributable to more info on CTE coming out and families of means are directing their kids into other outlets. Some of it is young people themselves pursuing other interests.

Also, even before covid, you had weather conditions cancelling a few dozen college and high school games every season. That's only going to become more common. If you told me even two years ago that the 2020 season would look like this, I'd think you were an alarmist, but here we are.

For college football, we'll probably see another round of conference consolidations or partnerships, expanding the playoffs, and locking in participants. That's what TV wants and ad revenue for live broadcasts will be the water that floats the boats. The cost will be a lot fewer schools having the means to field a team. I don't like it, but that's what's been trending for years.

Personally, I'm a Bama fan, so I know if football's only being played on the moon and Tuscaloosa, we're nuts enough to start erecting Apollo rockets. But I'll miss all the rest of it.

6 team playoff where all conference champions get in. One at-large team. Top 2 teams get a bye. More teams from more regions need the hope that they can get in the playoffs.

Not having Clemson vs bama every year would go a long way.

Clemson is a great team, but they also benefit from - by far - the easiest path to the playoffs. It's not just that the ACC is bad; they literally are miles away from Clemson in terms of accumulated talent.

Bama, OTOH, while more talented doesn't have that "miles ahead" benefit. Sure, against some teams, but not the Georgias, LSUs or Floridas of the conference.

Ohio State is also going to be up there for the foreseeable future. The B1G is a mess outside of the top spot, despite how often they try and pump up the other teams.

So you're going to ask 128 FBS schools to give up the revenue of that 12th game? How many teams do you think you would get to agree...especially after this season's devastating economic impact?

So have the conference champion from between 8-0 Alabama and 8-0 Florida, or 8-0 LSU and 8-0 Georgia, decided by some dumbass tiebreaker instead of on the field? Uh, no thanks.

Until you find away to:

- Bring back the college experience of football on campus you want produce the love of watching and following the sport. That is it's life's blood. You create fans by that. Fans last.

- Level the competitive field by reducing the scholarships to the NFL levels will add to the fan base and attendance... therefore creating fan that watch on TV.

For Bama, that would result in the loss of 17 4 star players and 5 3 star players that are practically 4 stars.

- Limit the recruiting classes to 10-13.

For Bama, that means 7 players that are 4 to 5 stars can't be signed.

Over all, there are 350 players that are 4 star and up. More will be added as the season goes.

That means 35 teams could fill the their entire class with 4 stars and up.

We will continue to see numbers drop.

I'm not sure anything can save the game of football, college or pro. When it comes to college football, the universities themselves are their own worst enemy.
Here is what Alabama's 2019 schedule looked like:
Duke
New Mexico St.
Southern Miss
Western Carolina
8 conference games
That schedule was indicative of every top 10 school in the country.

You want to spark interest? Replace Duke, New Mexico, Southern Miss and W. Carolina with Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Clemson and one more conference game. Now you've got something worth watching.

There are only so many of those to go around.

Until it becomes more competitive... It's BLAH. Like I said, I don't even keep up with recruiting anymore because I know we are going to land a top class.
