Whats really stopping South Carolina from Being Good in Football?

I get bashed for expecting more of an ROI than what we get. So I'm wondering what opposing fan bases see as our issues. And for those who say it "cant be done here ever". Keep in mind those 3 top 10 finishes and 5 years of damned good football we got out of a "half here" Spurrier.
My theory is we're far too loyal of a fan base. And our BOTs and decisions makers take us for granted and just milk mediocrity. Imagine if a bad head coach hire got an AD fired with him like it would at Auburn, LSU or Bama.

Smaller talent pool for college football now. That's why there is zero parity in the sport.

My guess is the right HC. SC just needs to catch lightning in a bottle with the right hire.

SC checks off a lot of boxes needed for success:
- passionate fanbase
- top notch facilities (much needed recent upgrades in and around WB)
- SEC conference membership
- fertile recruiting area
I think you nailed it with the BOT/decision makers comment. Incompetent and complacent "leadership" seems to be a systemic problem and will require a complete over haul of personnel and accountability from the supporters. As much as I would like to see SC remain mediocre, there is a shite-load of untapped potential with the program.

The biggest obstacle is your history, imo. You have access to Georgia and Florida talent. Right now with Clemson going so well, and Georgia doing better you are in a tough position.
Holtz and Spurrier proved that SC can have winning football, though, so it's a matter of getting the right coach.

Spurrier put the weenie to you by effectively retiring a couple of years before he bothered to officially leave the side lines.
That allowed Clemson to recruit their way into being a dominant football power. It is not fun to share a state with a rival who is a perennial top 5 team.
Basically its not the BoT that is holding you back. You had a HoF head coach that steered you onto the rocks and his replacement, Will Muschamp, is thoroughly mediocre head coach.
Trust me. It could be much worse. After the last 8 years Arkansas fans would kill for an awesomely average head coach.

Lack of tradition, history, chutzpah....those answers are mouth breather answers. It has nothing to do with Clemson or Georgia or anybody else in the SEC. South Carolina needs, like everybody else, a top tier coaching staff or elite recruits. And if it’s the latter, not just one or two, but all over the field.
Spurrier won because he was still damn good, put together a good staff, and had enough studs to compete.
There is no secret sauce.

2010 Garcia, Lattimore, Alshon was a peak USC imo.
Such an awesome trio.
Wins vs UGA, Bama, Fla
Same with Arkansas that year when they beat LSU and UGA.
Ryan Mallett was pretty damn good.
Knile Davis too and they had like 4-5 really good receivers.
Spurrier and Petrino fielded some tough teams in the SEC and could hang with anyone.
All you need is the right head coach.

Jimmies and Joes
Your not recruiting at a high enough level to compete. You need a coach who can get the guys in and coach them.
Spurrier landed Clowney, Lattimore, Gilmore etc.
Combine that with Clemson becoming a national power and your in a shitty spot. Starts with the players though. Need to get depth and quality into the program

Clemson was in a spot that being slightly more committed to football than peers in football was enough with Miami and FSU committing program suicide to win enough to start the national prominence ball rolling. They then fed off it.

SOS made y’all pretty damn good.
Lack of a great coach
In state talent isn’t as abundant as states like Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Ms, Florida.
Having to share the state with Clemson who is now a championship program and can take all the top in state talent

I think having to recruit against Clemson and Appalachian State is extremely tough for them. Students that aren't quiet good enough to make it to Clemson end up going to Appalachian State because it's in such an incredible area. Not much attraction to Columbia.

The answer is and always has been our BOT structure. We have 1 BOT member per judicial circuit in the state, which means the circuits in the Upstate have as much voting power as those in the Midlands, despite a fraction of the fans and alums. All of these BOT members are selected by the legislature, which means they are political appointments for people loyal to the General Assembly, not the University. And last, there is no requirement that our BOT members have a degree from the University. The BOT member from my judicial circuit went to Sewanee.
Clemson has less BOT members than we do. Only half of their BOT members are selected by the legislature, while the other half are selected by the outgoing BOT member. These processes make coming to a consensus at Clemson far easier and make decisions up there far less political than they are here. Beyond this, Clemson's BOT has one major concern: to whip South Carolina's arse in football. South Carolina's BOT has two major concerns: enriching themselves and influence peddling.
The University of South Carolina will never win anything of note in football until there is a structural overhaul of our BOT. It will continue to be a job where re-tread coaches come at the end of their careers to make several million a year and be treated like a God for winning 8 games.

USC should be better.
I think it could happen.
A&M should be great.
Not sure what holds them back.

I mean, it's recruiting mostly. South Carolina has had some good teams and you've won some big games hitting above your weight level. But it's going to be hard to get to that next level until Clemson comes back down to earth. It will happen eventually.

Same reason all Big 6 schools are not more successful. They don't cheat enough.
