How many people knew about this holiday before this year ? Now they want to make it a National Holiday. Is it the new Kwanzaa ?

100% knew about it for as long as I can remember.

I however thought it was a state holiday, not a national one. It’s to celebrate when slaves in Texas learned of their freedom.

You shouldn’t have known.
It’s a Texas holiday.
We grow up with it (it’s taught in elementary school).
Don’t beat yourself up.

I'd never heard of it until I started working in Texas regularly. Early 2000's or so. I came back to Birmingham and asked some of my black coworkers if they knew about the black holiday where everyone drank red soda.

They told me I was full of shite.

Learned about it this year. My wife claims she’s known about it for years. I had heard of Emancipation Day though

Where I'm from, it was Ada May day. Folks learned about emancipation on the May 8th.

I like the sound of Ada May better. Would be great to have two days in the first ten days of May that I could attempt to justify getting knuckle-dragging drunk.

There is an annual Juneteenth thread on the OT board where mostly the same people claim to have never heard of it every year.

Imagine if every cultural group demanded their own national holiday, or just any other cultural group in general.
