You act like Auburn has historically been a 10 win team. I am probably older than you and have been around Auburn a lot longer and I can tell you, Auburn is historically a 8 win team with an occasional great season.

How many times does someone have to remind you that historically, teams used to only play 10-11 games a year also?

When jang said this, he was definitely talking about the older Auburn fans such as yourself.

You can take that however you want

B.... To accomplish what they have during Saban's reign is pretty amazing.

They legitimately cost Alabama one national championship since Malzahn got there in 2013. He beat Alabama in 2017 but we still won it all, so I couldn't care less about that season. 2019 might have cost us a chance at making the playoffs but I highly doubt we win it all with that defense we were fielding at the end of the season.

He recruits better than any previous AU coach, runs a clean program, his players stay out of and they graduate. He will never embarrass Auburn off the field, and that's important to AU, high character is paramount over there. His own fan base are his heaviest critiques and he's had to navigate the PTB/BOT Auburn for years which speaks to his intestinal fortitude.

I give him a solid B+

Um, you know he’s won the SEC in the last 7 years, right?

Yes, I do. You know that four coaches have won it in the last seven years and not three as stated in the post I was replying to, right? That was my point.

In the SEC west that is better than a B..IMO. I had forgotten that his bowl record is so bad.

When Auburn has an off year. They seem to go down a little harder than others.

If Auburn was in the SEC East their record would be much better. As would LSU.. Miles would probably still be LSU coach if we were in the East. Just easier. And No Bama dominance.

more importantly he's kept Alabama in check going 3-4 against Saban and winning 2 out of the last 3 Iron Bowls

Auburn fans in a nutshell. Who cares about losing 4 games a year, National or SEC championships, when we can beat Alabama!?

No, reality in a nutshell. During the best run in Bama’s history he has held his own better than any other coach in the SEC. Not any coach at LSU, UGA, or UF. Look at UT and the other programs and see how they held up. Like at other Conferences while they have had a team that has dominated the scene. Look at the ACC with Clemson, Big 12 with OU or the Pac12 with USC in the early 2000s. There were not any team or coaches the came close to holding their own against them. So yes, you have to judge Gus by how he has done against Saban.

Using your own logic, he should average 10-11 wins per season then since he has more games to get there.

This is gold. That is exactly the point he was making.

Gus is fine for Auburn. He has kept them steadily on their historic WL path.

Gus has had his issues, but you have to look around and see who has withstood the storm better than him during Saban's run.
Richt ?
Miles ?
Freeze ?
Kiffen ?
Jones ?
Pruitt ?
Fisher ?
Boom ?
MacElwain ?
Spurrier ?
Mullen ?
Smart ?
Even O ?

It is not about Bama, it is about competing against any team that is sitting on top at that time. Nobody really competed with Spurrier when he was on top. Even the biggest Gus hater has to admit he is holding his own better than any other coach in the league against Saban.

I'd argue that Dabo Swinney is "holding his own better than any other coach in the league against Saban."

I'm not a big fan of Dabo but he is 2-2 vs. Saban as a head coach and both of those wins were in the national title game, which is played at a neutral site.

It's hard for me to see Gus winning against Saban in a similar situation considering he still hasn't beaten Saban away from Jordan-Hare.
