No, it isn't that dumb. While I can't speak to these parents, I can say from first-hand experience that hiding in your house for months after such a tragedy is more ordinary than out of it.
The optics of things such as this can be easily construed into a narrative that the boy wasn't cared about. What I believe is that these parents are getting faux support from these opportunists who are using these parents for a photo op. Eventually these parents will be left behind. What they do then is on them.

We did a similar vacation is Tsavo West, Kenya. Stayed in tents, could hear the animals at night. And the darkness & stars are something to be seen.
The safari was a lot of fun too. At first going in, when you see a giraffe or zebra the driver stops, lets you take as many pics as you want. By the end of the first day they're just another zebra or giraffe. It's just whatever there are so many.

Because I hate Democrats, socialism, forced redistribution. It's obvious Republicans want these things too, maybe a slightly slower pace?

I was driving through Clayton County GA several years back, got pulled over for doing 53/45 or something. I'm White, the officers black female, started asking me questions.
These questions were coming, presumably because my address was 60 miles away, and they thought it might be drug related. I was really driving through there for work.
She asks me what I did to afford a nice car. I started getting irritated & told her something like "I went to school to do a job that paid well & I don't waste money on alcohol, tobacco, or terrible looking tattoos."
I guess she got it that I was talking about hers, started trying to lecture me about what she could do. I just sat there & looked straight ahead. Then he let me off with a warning explaining how generous she was to me.

Recently in an airport bar & it was playing with the volume. It was the first time I'd actually watched it. The level of play was comparable to a mediocre high school boys game. Second, the announcers were trying so hard to talk it up. The drive, the level of competition they talked about. The male announcer was especially pathetic with his big smiles & exaggerated tone. It really was terrible to watch.
