Yeah, he can beat Alabama every few years, but when’s the last time we won something significant? 2013? With consistently good recruiting classes, there’s no excuse for all these 8 win seasons. I’d say a C+

But since he is one of 3 coaches to take home an SEC championship in the last 7 years, B it is. 28-7 How did this statement make it past so many without being called out? FFS, Auburn was the team on the losing side of this game.

Um, you know he’s won the SEC in the last 7 years, right?

I don’t know the grade but I know I want him to stay at Auburn forever.

2013 almost seems like an outlier for Malzahn while 2017 was a “what could’ve been year” year if not for Kerryon Johnson’s injury. Other than that he is has been average.
Auburn is not where they want to be and doesn’t look to be getting there anytime soon.

On the bright side, he has 3 wins vs Bama.

I'd give him a B or B+. The guy catches a lot of hell and flack from Arkansas fans (sour grapes) and Auburn alike. But his resume at every single coaching job he's ever had is beyond impressive.

So do the “we are and have always been an 8-4 school” Auburn fans.

Never mind the fact that coaches like Pearl and Dabo can knock down low historical ceilings of success with no problem.

Gus belongs at Auburn. I give him a solid B.

2020 is a 'hanging chad'.

Probably where I am. He could have won two or three games that would of made him a A but he didnt.

Took over after one of the worst seasons in Auburn history.

Gave us one of the best seasons we ever had.

Gave us some of the best moments we ever had

Has recruited better than any coach at Auburn history

Minus

Had a few bowl games we needed to win

Changed what he is good at on offense to what he sucks at due to outside noise and has never fixed that issue. My biggest beef with him

Needs to get us more competitive against UGA and LSU on the road.

Needs to go back to the visor and sweater vest.

In my opinion Gus is an average coach. He is a 7-5 / 8-4 kind of coach. Take away his 1st year at Auburn (2013) and that is pretty much what he has done.

An Average coach should get an average grade = C

3-4 against Saban

This is his most impressive stat line honestly. AU has always been a rollercoaster in terms of consistency. But, without this stat, he isn't AUs coach this year IMO.

Personally, I like it as well. He really gets his players to play hard in the IB. He keeps passion in the rivalry, which I think CNS has not done so well at for a variety of reasons.

7 Winning seasons

I get that the Chizik years are still in your memory, but in the era of 12 game regular seasons where 1/4 of those games are against mid-majors and FCS teams, this isn't something to brag about at a school like Auburn.

Sorry, but Auburn isn't South Carolina. I know you guys would love Malzahn's record, but it sucks at Auburn.

easy B to B+

and these comparisons to other teams are crap, Auburn has played one of the hardest schedules in the country every year Malzahn's been there. lets go through it.

1. SECw is more difficult than SECe; check
2. Georgia toughest team in SECe; Check
3. Full challenge nonconference opponent every year:
2014 - @Kstate, top25 team who is just 2 years removed from 11-1 2012 Campaign
2015 - Louisville - 8-9 win team at the time; weakest nonconf slate of Malzahn's tenure
2016 - Clemson
2017 - @Clemson
2018 - Washington, went to Rose bowl in 2018 Fiesta 2017, playoff 2016
2019 - Oregon, eventual pac12 champ.

Correct me if I'm missing something, but of the SEC teams with current or at least very recent national title relevance(LSU Alabama, Georgia, Auburn), Auburn is the only school that puts a team that could beat them without it being an upset on its schedule every year. You look at LSU Bama and Georgia and it really feels like a concerted effort to schedule top25 schools with storied history that are therefore chronically overrated. Notre Dame with Georgia, Texas, Wisconsin, Miami for LSU, FLaSt, Wisconsin, USC etc for Alabama. These are teams that look maximally good on the resume once people have forgotten the specifics of the year and day. I'm not complaining, it's clever gamesmanship, but the point is you can't really compare Auburn to other schools, even in the SECw for results because their schedule is always significantly more difficult.

Looking at 2020, id say LSU has 2 games they are fully in jeopardy for, while Auburn Georgia and Alabama all have 3, and only because Georgia and Alabama are playing each other for the first time in 5 years. More often than not Auburn plays 4 losable games a year and LSU, Georgia, and Alabama play 2.

I know you and I have bated heads over this before but you are just wrong. His winning percentage is as good or better than the majority of Auburn coaches and he has done that against a much harder schedule.

Plus he took over a very shitty team.

You act like Auburn has historically been a 10 win team. I am probably older than you and have been around Auburn a lot longer and I can tell you, Auburn is historically a 8 win team with an occasional great season.

Im not saying that is what I want or what should be acceptable but you saying "It sucks at Auburn is just plain old BS. It is Auburn. It always has been Auburn

B+ overall

They had an outrageous schedule last year and still finished the regular season 9-3, beat playoff-bound Bama (had they won the iron bowl), and never looked overwhelmed in any game they lost.

Would definitely be an A- or probably better had Auburn played better in their last two bowl losses and didn't let 2014 completely slip from their grasp

He's a C. Just does enough to not get fired. If not for wins over Alabama in 2017 and 2019 he wouldn't be here
