The great irony in all of this is that the IHL’s complete incompetence has united the ole miss community in a way we haven’t see in years. If I lived in oxford I would be out there protesting shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of people I disagree with on probably 99% of other issues.
That's exactly what is happening. I typed a lot, more than I should say really, and edited it back down. Basically, the vast majority of people working at Ole Miss are not anything like James Thomas, and in slapping down the handful of James Thomas' on campus, IHL just gut punched the rest of us. And for whatever bit of schadenfreude they are getting to enjoy today, they handed the new chancellor a pretty toxic environment. There are a lot of people that would have been happy to give him a chance if this had been an open process that are going to be very hard to win over now.

So we are bitching about the hiring process. Is he qualified or naw?
Damn y’all mad AF.

No he isn’t. They interviewed Presidents of actual high-level public institutions and hired a retired one from a Community College. The IHL sabotaged a year long process to come to a conclusion which was foregone from the beginning. He will be a puppet for the IHL and the state political system.

Is anyone going to the protest today?

Is it true there is gnashing of teeth because he is supposedly conservative?

I’m an alumnus and was in the Greek system. It isn’t because he is conservative, but because of the cronyism and lack of transparency that have trademarked the process.

No, he could be green party for all anybody cares. He wasn't a candidate to be considered.

I'm seeing overwhelming positive comments about him. Why should kids and perpetually offended faculty who have done their best to destroy the University decide who the next chancellor is? Most of them will never give back to the University or live in Mississippi after graduation. If these shrieking babies are against him them I am for him.

You are insulated and out of touch

Seems like you and I are the only two who aren’t outraged right now

The students and faculty were never going to pick the next chancellor to begin with. I can't speak for the students, but I think most everyone connected to reality knew we were getting a conservative chancellor. The vast majority of us aren't irked over whether we got a chancellor with an R™ or a D™ next to his or her name. I could actually care less about the chancellor's politics if they are good at running a university, and I think most of us that work at them feel the same.
We're irked because this is just naked cronyism and aren't so blinded by getting a hardon about anything that pisses off our political rivals that we aren't bothered by the ethics of the situation. I was born and raised in Mississippi, so anyone who thinks I don't have any connection to the state can piss off. I'm absolutely tired of seeing high-level jobs go to people based not on their qualifications but their connections. Boyce could agree with me on everything from politics to the way a university should be run, but it doesn't change the fact that the way he was hired was just stereotypical Mississippi and shady as hell. If he's actually a great choice, he got slighted by the way this was handled as much as anyone else.
