He never should have left CSU. Money is great and all but he’s a west coast guy and he had it made there. Fort Collins is a great town and he had zero expectations. Think how fun it would be to be in a quality-of-life place like that with no pressure?

Him winning the east reflects how poorly that division is vs Jim being a good coach.

Butch brought talent in. He wasn't void of skills. JM rode Champs D.

I thought Bielema was a great hire when you realize they weren’t trying to beat peak-Saban Bama, they were trying to be Wisconsin south

I think this speaks to the 'fit' of football hires, especially in the SEC. That style of play isn't going to win at Arkansas. Teams like Arky, Ole Miss, South Carolina, etc. aren't going to line up and win 'smash-mouth' style games against LSU, Bama, and Georgia consistently.

Each of those teams has done really well when they've had coaches that embrace a more open style of offense: Petrino, Freeze, Spurrier. I wouldn't call it gimmicky, so much as using the 'big' teams strengths against them.

I think a guy like Kiffin (if he is focused and held accountable) could be a killer at a second-tier SEC school because he's got a very creative offensive mind. Chip Kelly is another one, thankfully he went back out West.

How'd he do in the SEC other than those life championships?

Sigh, that has nothing to do with the hire.

You judge hires based on how they look on paper the day the coach is hired. If it doesn't work out, unless its for reasons that were obvious day one like a poor fit, that is bad luck not a poor hire.

Ed O was worse.

McElwain took over a mess and it stayed a mess.

Ed O is going to run LSU's functional program into the ground.

I don’t think he was any worse then Muschamp. Muschamp took over a team that had more offensive talent then he left . Then Mac did the same thing with the defense. Muschamp had a better situation coming in after Meyer .

I still think Butch (and Bert to a lesser extent) are worse hires, but the margin is slim

You have no idea how happy we'd have been if Bert had shown the zeal for life to go out and molest a shark. I think McElwain gets the nod... but there is the getting beaten up by a lackluster Arkansas team on his resume.

Neck and neck between Butch and Dooley, then Bert to round out the top 3.

All the people saying Mullen confuse me.

I for one am not looking forward to seeing a Mullen offense with Florida talent again. I know Tebow had a lot to do with it, but that offense is a damn well-oiled machine.

Muschamp gave AF tho. You can argue his strategy, but he wanted UF to win. Jim pulled a Saul Goodman and dared someone to fire him.

I still don't think offense is the reason Bielema failed though. Maybe the terrible OL later in his tenure, but overall his offenses were usually average to really good (2015). He nearly beat Alabama and beat LSU twice, but struggled against A&M, Mississippi State and Missouri. I didn't see it as a style of offense thing. The same style won the SEC west under Nutt in 2006.

The problem is he had the two worst defenses in Arkansas history the last two years.

You'd know better than me, but you think a Malzahn offense in 2006 was similar to what Bielema was trying to run?

Mac wasn't even the worst UF hire in recent history.
