I thought McElwain was good coach with potential but was a horrible fit at Florida. He was a west coast guy who wasn't a dynamic recruiter. While he was doing good things at Colorado State, he needed time to get seasoning and even then he probably was never cut out for life in the SEC. He would've had a lot more success at a Pac-10 school.

Florida is the kind of like Alabama and other top tier jobs in that you can't afford to hire someone who needs on the job training. They have to come in and be able to hit the ground running. They have to be ready for life in the fish bowl and capable of surviving the kife fight that is SEC recruiting. McElwain was none of that. With the resources Florida has, I didn't understand why they shelled out so much for McElwain.

Oddly enough, I think his reaction to the shark photo was really revealing. Someone who is secure in themselves either has fun with that or doesn't even give it the time of day. McElwain got angry over it to the point where I went from thinking it wasn't him to thinking "Wait, why is he being so defensive about this?"

No, for some reason all 3 UF fans think horse face can do no wrong.

I don't see how anyone could argue with that.

Foley definitely struck out when it came to football hires. Machen gets the credit for Urban since they were boys already at Utah.

He won the east two times even if they were BS lucky wins due to the east being down.

More than most coaches do

Foley gets criticized all the time, he still does. The guy is a legend in the AD business, but he definitely made his share of mistakes. I personally think Mac was his biggest and is partially the reason Foley’s exit wasn’t as ceremonious as one might expect given his history at Florida.

I thought Bielema was a great hire when you realize they weren’t trying to beat peak-Saban Bama, they were trying to be Wisconsin south and win 10 games a year and play a NYD bowl game. He just couldn’t get it done, but not the worst recent hire.

McElwain won the East twice, no way he was the worst recent hire.

Dooley was barely .500 at La Tech, had no functional area in which excelled and was not known as a recruiter. He alienated fans, had players who got in trouble and didn’t win at a top 20 program given plenty of time and no probation. Strong contender.

Sumlin had his program on the cusp of national prominence, had a Heisman winner and beat Saban. No way he was the worst.

Butch Jones won 9 games twice and recruited well. Also won 11 games at CMU and 10 wins at Cinncinati. Far more than Dooley can claim.

Mike Price was a terrible cultural fit, but had back to back 10 win seasons at Washington State of all places. Far worse resumes than his despite his night with destiny in Destin.

I’d go Dooley as worst hire of the post BCS era but let’s just say LSU should avoid casting any stones because they could be topping this list in 2-3 years.

Based on this the SEC all-time worst UT holds the No.1 spot.

O is 17-6 since taking over as hc (74%). over that same period dan mullen went 13-9 (59%), gus malzahn went 16-7 (70%),and jimbo fisher went 14-8 (64%)........

O isn’t nearly as bad as some make him out to be.

I think O is a better coach than he gets credit for. Definitely better than Mac. Still at the bottom of the west though. Hopefully asst’s & solid recruiting offsets his lack of XnO abilities

This thread is as good a place as any to make a confession: I thought Dooley was gonna kill it at Tennessee

Joker Phillips was bad, but that's just hindsight talking.

It made sense at the time of the hire. He had been a good OC under Brooks, a solid recruiter, and they wanted continuity from what Brooks had done. He was also a UK guy through and through. He just had no idea how to run and maintain a program. If there was ever a guy I really wanted to see succeed as HC at Kentucky, it was Joker.

Especially when compared to the disasters Tennessee have hired.

The last two coaches were guaranteed failures from day one. frick any Vol who spent the last 8 years defending Botch and Dooley.

Foley was a great AD but made a couple of what turned out to be terrible hires. McElwain, Muschump and you could throw in Zook for a close 3rd. All 3 were up and coming coaches that if they had worked out would have been at UF for years. Now they just battle for the title "worst coach in Gator history".

But, for the record none were the worse SEC hire in recent history unless we are not considering Tennessee hires.
